New Springer Question

Recommended Posts

After searching for a new springer I have narrowed it down to two models in.22 calibre, a 97K or a TX200HC. The final deciding factor is going to be which model is the quietist? Off the shelf both are similar, but the TX200HC may be fitted with a moderator in addition to the shrouded barrel. Has anyone here encountered a TX200HC with the optional moderator, and is it a worthwhile modification?

Hi Steve.

I used a Parker Hale silencer for some years on my TX200HC .177 which gave a nice, cosmetic length rather than actively suppressing the sound. The rifle is pretty near-silent at 30yards and onwards so, I no longer use it on my TX200. The balance and handling, for me at least, is much better without it, to be honest. You cannot silence the spring's firing action from operating with any moderator. The .22 version should be a little quieter so, I would say your final decision would be more on the lines of whether or not you like the look of your carbine with one, or without?!

Edit to add. Both rifles are superbly accurate and not too noisy as they come.

Thanks for that Simon, I would be perfectly happy without an additional moderator fitted in the field, but I need to hone my skills with a springer before venturing out hunting. The reason I want to keep it as silent as possible is so I don’t annoy one of my neighbours while I am shooting in my back garden. I had a snide comment off one of them early last year while shooting my old Webley springer; since then I have only used my quiet PCP’s so as not to draw unwanted attention.

I must admit I am leaning towards the TX200HC; dare I say it! It looked better finished off than the 97K; even though the AA is a little stockier and perhaps slightly heavier than the Weihrauch. I’ve now slept on it for a few days and mulled over pros and cons, a second look tomorrow to make my final choice and then bring it home.

Hi Steve,

Good to see you on here again mate and thanks for the parcel you sent me last week. Tried it and it seems a massive improvement buddy so thumbs up from me mate.

Going back to your question id say go for the TX200HC mate. Its a better looking rifle and it will shoot like a semi tuned rifle from the RFD. As others have said they are pretty quiet too mate compared to some springers and with it being in .22 it will be very tame.

Choice now made; I bought a .22 TX200HC along with a Mamba 4x16x50 scope. I put the salesman through it though. I tried several scopes but decided the MTC was the one; I had him mount the scope clear of the breach so I could check the eye relief before finally making the purchase.

At a later date I am going to try my MTC Connect on my new AA TX, I know MTC don’t recommend using them on a springer because of the very close eye relief, but the recoil is so light I think I will get away with it.

Thanks to everyone for their advice in helping me make the final selection.

Thanks to you too Si, I hope your move went smooth and you are settling in OK.

Regards, Steve
