tillylamp 1,831 Posted March 11, 2013 Report Share Posted March 11, 2013 hi, i was thinking of taking up a bit of fly fishing along side my other fishing,but which are good fly rods and reels?what size reel would i need?also what line? i just need pointing in the right direction, when i saw some reels for sale on flea bay they had a couple of numbers like 6/7 or 8/9 what does this mean,? i would like to use it on the rivers,for chub, rudd, roach,and even the odd trout that comes my way as we dont have alot of trout where i am, any advise will be much appriciated and thanks in advance, tillylamp Quote Link to post
burto 18 Posted March 11, 2013 Report Share Posted March 11, 2013 if you are going river fishing the numbers 6/7 or 8/9 is the line size the rod you will buy should have the line rating on it 4/5 6/7 8/9 ect on it the size of the rod will depend on what you can cast i use a severn to eight foot on the rivers i fish as to what rods to buy thats up to your pocket a medium range price to start off then if its for you a greys or similar as they come with a life time garrentee Quote Link to post

paulk73 151 Posted March 24, 2013 Report Share Posted March 24, 2013 The rod numbers need to correspond with the line weight pal. if you buy a 7/8 rod that's the line you need to use to load the rod up on the back cast. small rivers 4/5 weight. commercials 7/8 should do ya. maybe take 1 lesson before you start. it will make so much difference. wish i did. then you have no bad habits to try and undo pal. lifelong cumbrian 1,826 Posted March 24, 2013 Report Share Posted March 24, 2013 Not trying to confuse you but say you bought a #6 weight rod, #6 line is correct but when you are just starting out or are fishing small rivers where you would have difficulty getting a full line out you might be better with the #7 line on the #6 rod. You will load the rod easier with shorter line out that you would be able to put out as a novice and a line only one size up will not damage the rod even with the full line out. Just my personal opinion mate. I think a good rod for the river would be a 9' #6, that is what i use most for river trout. Quote Link to post
