gouldy257 79
I've recently bought 36 birds and have them divided into 2 pens 5 roosters and 12 hens in one pen and 12 hens and 7 roosters in the other pen i'am hoping to gather eggs of them and hatch out under broody hens. what i'am wondering is will the roosters kill one another through mating season?? can i keep the roosters together in another pen providing I've no hens in along with them or will they still fight and kill one another their a cross with a Chinese ringed neck and Michigan blue-back... please let me no your thoughts so i can prevent them killing one another if so cheers..... 1 Quote Link to post
roebuck220 80
If your talking about pheasants you dont need that many cocks in each pen, 2 in each would be plenty. The cocks are not likely to kill each other, but they will kill the hens by treading them with the numbers you have. (ripping their backs open while shagging). You can cut/file the spurs off the cocks to help prevent this. 1 Quote Link to post
Gkeeper111 22
Definately cut the "cocks" (not roosters- were not in America) numbers down. They will basically kill the hens from mating. Buy some saddles for them also. 1 cock to 5 hens will do, keep a few cocks spare and separate in a different pen as spares. Cheers A Quote Link to post
Lab 10,979
I cut the numbers down too 2 cocks in each pen 2. If you got all the cocks at the same time they should be ok in the one pen as long as its big enough, once they have established its there home dont add any other cocks....they'll be hammered in no time... When i had them in smaller pens i had 1 cock to 9 hens. It was a good ratio getting 8/9 eggs a day and good fertility. Your cock birds will be fine altogether. Well i say fine they will try everything to die.....but thats pheasants for you... Quote Link to post

Oh I wouldn't worry about Roebuck mate. I think that was a lame attempt at humour. See he is from north of Dundee so only used to socialising with sheep and "chookters".......(basically a 'very' close nit community).......if you see what I'm dating....;-)Lol Quote Link to post
