Training To Retrieve

Recommended Posts

hi all,

my pup is 6 months now and he is recently undergoing the biggest mental change of his life, i want to start getting him to retrieve and plan to buy a small rugby ball (slightly flat) for me to grubber kick and for him to chase and hopefully bring back awarding when necessary.

does anyone have any tips/pointers on this type of training or any previous experience in success or fails in retreve training???

The training should have commenced far earlier, find something the dog likes to chase and bring back, then repetition.

better off with a rabbit skin dummy and don,t overdo the training, little and often, as soon as you see the dog losing interest stop and leave it for another day

whats best to use for a rabbit skin dummy, are these home made?

make yourself or you can buy them made with artificial fur

Sneak up behind a rabbit, shout BOO at the top of your voice, the rabbit will jump out of its skin, quickly grab it before the startled bunny and your ready to go.

I start by hetting the dog play with what i am going to use and playing a bit of a tug of war so he wont let go of it then whn he wonts throw it for him and get the dog to start the retrieve back to me then I turn around and walk away and he should run back to because he thinks your going to leave him and whn u have got that bit bomb proof I start with getting him to delive to hand but like its been said it should be a game for him or he won't do it and lose interest

Good advice but I would stop BEFORE the dog loses interest and still wants the dummy. If its losing interest you've over done it and its not a game any more.
