everyone moans about the ruination of our native terrier breeds ,then when someone suggests working one they get shot down on here. if its cheap ,why not try it as a busher/ratter. also what i find

Genetically the potentials there but............the breeding through previous generations has probably not had hunting ability taken into consideration so the odds would be stacked against them being

I agree with the above but we have a small Cocker X poodle that is work mad, bush's, rats, and goes to ground, very controlable, much better than some so called working spaners i,v seen, put any dog i

Think folk are missing the point. Any bin tipper can catch the odd rabbit, kill the odd rat or do a bit of bushing. The lads who dedicate all of their time to this type of hunting with terriers will have dogs that are worlds apart ability wise. If you seriously believe its worth the time, training & cost of rearing a chance bred dog like the above, rather than buying a working bred pup......you're completely f***ing retarded

My first terrier was a westie x jack , cant say she worked to ground but ratted and bushed with the my mates dogs no problem

Sadly killed at 15 months old so she never had a chance to shine , but she certainly started off on the right path

2nd dog was a border x jack from working parents ( suposidely :hmm: )complete waste of space only terrier that ive had that had no interest in any type of work

Did you keep the border x till 2 years of age as i have a border x jrt and she was a late starter as most borders seem to be but now there is no stopping her,i just wonder how many people have given up on this breed to early thinking they where just shite when in fact they start later than most but out shine alot of others when they get there........and not saying you did that pal was just asking as i got her at 14 mths from a lad on the nearby farm who said"dog's thick as shite and won't do feck all could not catch a cold" well the same guy offered to buy her back a few months ago ;) she is asleep in front of the fire as i type lol ok ramble over :tongue2:

Have two Westie patter dale crosses. Accident litter, let nature take it cause and kept two pups. They're six now and have been in hunt service for four years, give them the right encouragement good chance they b ok. admitt both parents were working dogs v. Hard patt bitch to the wife's westie that started coming in truck to watch digs then decided to av a go. I'd work a pink poodle if it does the job. Can't b doing with this crap that only working stock is any good. It does help but a lot of good dogs get missed for this reason.

Your in hunt service and you think that using proven working stock to breed only HELPS in the production of good workers. FFS.

I guess the guys that have been puting the time and effort to improve working stock have got it all wrong. They should be puting lap dogs to their best bitches. aye right.

Yours in despair Pernod

Get one for the misses as a pet when its old enough give it a try if it works bonus if it doesnt nothing lost and she has a dog to keep her company while your out. Terriers in britian seem to be like laying fowls over here many breeds are very hard to find now days as every one has the latest and greatest commerical breed and the old breeds are forgottern about just the way of the world. Still is a bit sad to see old breeds of dogs , fowls , horses or whatever disappear into history.
