Ossie n Arch 1,682
How long you got ?? The XC90 is a 95/5 (I think) split 4x4 with 95% to the front 5% to the rear in normal driving. When the front wheels slip the sensors pick this up and transfer traction to the rear wheels via a angle gear and a spline sleeve. Only when you loose traction in normal driving will most people ever know if this system is working correctly. If you never loose traction you could quite happily drive a 2 wheel drive XC90 around for ever. A common problem on older models is that the spline sticks, so no traction at the rear wheels when you need it. You can check if the cars 4x4 is ok. Put the gearbox in Drive, footbrake off, get under the rear of the car and see if you can turn the rear drive shaft. If you can it's bollocksed. Not cheap to fix. Avoid Volvo themselves as they say they don't know what the problem is, (Tried to charge 2 hours labour and then didn't find anything) but they've now up-rated the new spline. We've had ours fixed under warrenty and it works fine now. The ride is superb, stick it in cruise and off you go. We tow our caravan with ours and it great at that. Plenty of room in the back for 2 big Lurchers Have a look here; http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=66098 But don't let that put you off, we love ours. .........Now, do you want me to tell you about "Limp home mode" ?? The Duncan 802
Thanks for the info and especially for the pic of the boot - I doubt I'd get my dog pack in the back of one so I reckon a Pathfinder is still the best choice for my circumstances. Appreciate the honest appraisal - Many thanks
