Hw 100 .177 Spot On At 30M But At 40M It Is 1 To 2 Inches To The Right, Help!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am a newby to your forum but looking for some sound advice. (don't say sell the rifle)

I have bought myself a new HW 100 .177 and fitted it with a Hawke Sidewinder 4-16 x 50. The package is just over a month old and I think I have put about 800 pellets though it. Blame Si Pittway, as I was impressed by his target shooting on Youtube.

The rifle is set up for 30m and is spot on using JSB pellets. However, when I try shooting at 40m (no wind) the pellets are up to 2 inches to the right. I am certain it is not me because if I compensate using the mill dots I hit the centre of the target.

I have tried H&N pellets and the same problem at 40m. The grouping at 30m is not as good as the JSB.

Any constructive thoughts really appreciated, thanks.

This may sound daft but are you sure that your scope is leveled off correctly mate, i.e the vertical line is running exactly vertical from north to south when the action is 100% level?

It sounds to me like it isn't and you have a bad case of false wind.

A way to test this is to shoot at 50 meters and see if the pellets POI is even more to the right. If it is then i suggest you watch this video on how to set up your scope correctly mate.

Hi Si,

Good to meet you, I enjoy your videos. Thanks for the advice, I am sure now I will be able to solve the problem. Looking at the scope alignment in doors, it does look a bit off so I'll re-set it tomorrow.

I note from your list of air rifles you no longer have the .177 but seemed to have replaced it with a 22.

Again, thanks for your help.

Regards

Also be careful you are not canting the rifle. A small amount may not be noticeable at 30yds, but will become apparent at longer distances.

First, follow Si's advice and make sure your scope is level. Once this is sorted, check your cant when at the range and see if it makes any difference.
