Ruger Magazine Issues

Recommended Posts

Ruger 77/22 but the 10/22 is very similar.

Was at Calton Range the other day, (money well spent). The 77/22 started giving problems, not loading correctly from the magazine. The ammo was baulking against the chamber as it was offered up too low. It was damaging the lead if it loaded.

Realised that if I held the mag up as fare as possible it was fine, there's slight movement and the weight of the mag allows it to drop slightly out of position.

Only did it with win subs, eley was fine.

Now, my last 77/22 must have had 10,000 rounds through the same mag without issue, this 1 has only done about 600 and most of those were winnies.

Can't see at easy fix at the moment and only have the 1 mag.

Anyone had similar, I think the 10/22 is very similar, only the outer profile of the mag being different.

This is a good video how to strip clean the mag on a 10/22 it's a peice of cake to do, you can wind the spring up more when we assembling to give more tension on the mag feed.

You may want to turn the sound down as his voice is annoying....

Went from bruno to ruger, wouldnt go back so no thanks on that 1, as said the previous 77/22 I had for 15 years never faulted on the same mag. I need to try a different mag, I know

I am well familiar with stripping the mag, they need doing once a year or so as they do tend to collect crap, but thanks anyway Seeker, the very 1st thing I did was to wind up the spring to ensure the shell was absolutely pressed to the upper edge of the mag. Even went a little further to the extent that it was fully wound at 8 shots not 10, no improvement.

I also filed down a very small brass washer and put it on the threaded centre pivot of the magazine. This has the effect of increasing the pivot length by about 0.5mm and has slightly tightened the fit in the housing, but a bit of a jar and the mag will still drop by about the same amount.

I played with this for a couple of hrs last night, no probs other than winnies, and out of a mag of 10 at least 5 will show clipping of the lead and scrapes to the brass.

Much as I would have sworn by this brand, I'm going to have to try others, l already need to try some match grade ammo as the results at the range were disapointing and I need to fully explore this, but then again if every other bullet gets clipped then it will be shooting off.

While I'm here and to put what I just said into perspective, it was the 1st time I'd shot at any range, took the .223, 17 hmr and the 22.

This isn't a bragging match as my shooting is no longer what it was but, the 223 was shooting around 3/4" groups at 100 yds and the 17 was as good. The 22 however was probably 3-4"

Now I know 100yds is a long zero range for a 22 but I expected better, this being bench rest stuff.

What do you reckon

might need a gunsmith to sort this one, I suppose the only other thing sold be to try a different mag if you haven't tried this already?

No, as said earlier I don't have another mag.

I an going back to the gunny shop as I need to try a different ammo for an accuracy check anyway, what I was getting at 100yds is far worse than I expected.

Gun is about 5 years old but hasn't fired more than 350 rounds (don't ask), and nothing has been screwed around with, the damage occurs against the very edge of the chamber, almost as if it is too sharp a radius.

I'll let him take a look at it anyway, he may have a mag in stock to compare with, bloody annoying to have to keep the left hand clamped around the mag when chambering a slug.

Well, took it in this morning, tried 3 other mags and a 25 round banana clip, all sloppy as hell. Gun issue not magazine.

Picked up a Ruger .22 magnum and the mag is a much better fit and importantly the spring tension on the mag release catch is much stronger.

Needs to strip this out and try to extend the centre pin and up the spring pressure
