Anyone Bought A "richards Microfit Stock" From The Usa??

Recommended Posts

As above folks,

I ordered a Richards Microfit Stock from the USA some months ago and it arrived today after ordering and paying for it some 3 months ago at least!

Anyhow, as the stock was only 95% to 98% finished, i have some sanding, and inletting to do. Infact less "inletting" more shaping. But either way alot of plaining and sanding!

More so as i may shorten the forend of the stock by around 6" and plain down the "comb" to suit my eye line.

Has anyone bought one of these stocks or a similar laminated stocks, (Boyds maybe?) and how did you go about finishing the stock and what products did you use to complete it. Like Tru-Oil and various others finishes...

I've heard mixed results from Tru-Oil. And to be honest i don't know of any other makes or products that people have used give good results.

I've also heard that it's not a good idea to use any oil on laminate? Why is that, if infact it is true??

Any objective opinions would be appreciated.

A few pictures of how it arrived.

Thanks

Jamie.

Hi.

I have a Richards stock on my Varmint although it is walnut, not laminate. I finished mine with Danish oil(about a tenner from B & Q) and after a few coats it came up great and any knocks are easy to refinish.

As for laminates not liking oil, that may be true for most plywoods but the stuff they use for stocks is very different, the grain of the laminations going the same way, unlike normal ply where they are alternate.

Cheers fellas!

I'm hoping to take the wood down a shade or 2. Would Tru-Oil or Danish Oil do this for me?

Also can you get different shades of Tru-Oil or Danish Oil?

Thanks

Jamie

Jamie.

You can get danish oil in a number of flavours, I had a Wichester 243 which was very light coloured. After a few knocks I decided to refinish it, using a darker danish oil(can't remember which one) and that came out great. If you have white spacers it will also darken them so be carefull.
