fieldsportsman 107
how old was your dog when you took it out lamping for the first time Quote Link to post
LaraCroft 863
It depended on the dog - some are more mature and ready than others. Mine have ranged from just over a year to nearly 3 years. I don't take them lamping as early as some - I like them to have puppy time, and learn stuff first. 2 Quote Link to post
Taz-n-Lily 62
We haven't been yet, but I think Taz will be three (at least) before we start. Quote Link to post

low plains drifter 10,241
I took my pup out to watch his mother run a few rabbits when he was 4 months old,the bitch put a hard strike in as the rabbit got near the hedge, she missed, but as the rabbit ran alongside the hedge towards me and the pup,the little fella did'nt make the same mistake,he was only supposed to be a spectator and was on a lead,I allowed the pup a chance to run with the bitch that same night on one rabbit, just to see what he would do,when the bitch stopped at the edge of the field, the pup jumped into the rough cover and managed to catch the rabbit,I,m certainly not saying you should start them so young, this was a home bred pup, that had,had a few weeks experience of learning how to jump across the narrow drainage ditches ,and sniffing out covey's of partridges through the daytime on the local farmland, even at such a young age he showed a very serious instinct to hunt and catch,he is 7.5 years old now and showing no signs of slowing down, not too bad for a so called thick saluki cross,he's never shown me anything less than 100% commitment, get out on the land, and your pup will let you know when it is ready to go atb 1 Quote Link to post
