I thought I'd share a photo of my 8 month old Collie/Bull/Grey. She's is turning out to be a heck of a good bitch on jackrabbits and coyotes in the US. Great size and about 40 lbs. Her brother is much more muscular and aggressive, but doesn't have near the speed, agility, endurance, and intellegence as her.

My 5 month old hound pup here with my three kids and their 10 month old catahoula x bulldog. They kilt three coyotes yesterday on their walk in the snow. We breed em hard over here folks!

I dont doubt that an 8 month old or a 5 month old is out working, given enough time in the field and if there is enough game to go at some dogs will be ready to tackle certain things, however, when it comes to a 5 or 8 month old dog.............being in on the kill with a couple of other dogs is not the same as being the single dog doing the killing, especialy on anything thats a rough customer.

My 10 month old has been on a few coyotes but ffs man if he hadnt had three "coyote dogs" there with him not only would he had never got within a 1/4 mile of it he would have got his ass whipped if it decided to just turn around and say piss off youngster, which they do at times believe it or not. They know what is chasing them somehow. And sometimes if they feel that a hound is not commited they will just stop, turn around and say get real bitch.

I know that and I'm just agreeing with you 100%. I do start my dogs very young according to some but I dont want late starters so it would be silly of me to wait no matter what. I started my Flirt gyp at 5 months old and she is the best gyp I've ever owned by 100x. Saturday she caught and pinned a coyote to the ground 100% by herself and had it pretty much out by the times the hounds got there.

Obviously it was many years ago, but I have seen a dog fox in January do exactly the same thing.....I have even seen one rush the dog.

 

I also caught 3 lads on some of my permission once, they had let 3 lurchers run a fox and the fox was stood holding all 3 at bay and having a sqaure go......I none too politel;y suggested they take their dogs home, borrow a gun and adminster the medicine to their dogs ASAP!!

 

That tough old fox lived to pass on his genes
