sussex 5,777
Having got home earlier than expected i rang my old mate to see if he was free to come out and sit up in one of the seats 5 min up the road at a little 200acre place i shoot.Four o clock we had a quick coffee loaded the quad ,various bit of kit &the dog left my place at quarter past four & were in the seats by four thirty, warm with a slight southerly i fancied the deer would be moving early.I was in the paddock seat my mate in the clearfell in the wood.Walking to the seats there was fresh slot just about every where.Earlier this morning on my way out i'd seen several deer cross the road going into our wood . It got to about 5.30 with nothing showing,it did cross my mind this was the first evening for a long while that it was comfortably warm, the last few months ,after an hour sitting there , you were numb with the cold .As the light started to fade just a little charlie appears at the top of the field ,one or two little squeaks he starts towards me ,he gets to about 120m & stops ,he's looking at something,30m in front of him & m or so in front of me 7 does walk out,he's still in the frame ,just as i am going to deliver his bad news there is movment with the does as a buck hobbles out, back leg missing at the lower joint,a single long spike on the opposite side to the missing limb & nomal antler on the other side he was charlies get out of jail card.!! The buck came clear & dropped ,charlie tore of across the field as the second 6.5 of the evening whizzed a foot or so in front of him,a little to much lead . The buck checked ,there was no doubt when it went down ,we loaded him to gralloch at home. The damage to the leg ,likely the result of getting hooked in a fence, was old & well healed, the muscle totally wasted.Washed cleaned & tagged he still weighed in at 92lb .Good evening ,glad to have got him ,not so pleased charles missed his funeral... 2 Quote Link to post
