Could I Have Done More?

Hi all, just went to feed my ferrets tonight to discover my oldest ferret has died, he was nearly 6 years old.

Around 2 weeks ago he had rapid weight loss, but was still eating, drinking ect fine, so i seperated him from the group in case he wasn't getting enough food and drink, he did perk up a little, then got bad again and started to fall over, but he was still eating and drinking fine, i am wondering weather he was ill or has died due to old age, because i would never forgive my self if there was any thing else i could have done, i didn't take him to vets because he seemed to perk up when he was on he's own then got really low again, he lost lots of weight and it started to look like he's back end was giving in.

Any way, RIP Freddie you was a great worker and friend to me, sleep tight up there big man!

Sorry to hear about your loss. You obviously love your ferrets and gave him a fantastic life, my lad died at 6 also, he was a big strong boy but when I first got him he was the same size as his sister. He was the runt of the litter and I think it caught up with him in the end and she went on to live till 10 years old. Just like people when your times up, its up and its not how long you live, its how youve lived and by the sounds of it your chap had one hell of a great life. Dont beat yourself up and remember the good times you had with him

Thanks a lot mate, still got 5 at the moment, they are all young and i think my oldest is 3, the rest are all only 1 year of age!

At least he is at peace sleeping tight now:)

If you need to find out then get a post mortem done at the vet, I think I was charged about £20 when I wanted to find out what suddenly killed my goshawk and it's worth it for the peace of mind. But six years isn't bad, we have an old hob here that is about the same age and although is eating well etc does show his age and probably won't see another twelve months, but that's part of keeping pets.

Just keep a close eye on your other ferrets to make sure they haven't caught anything, if they lose weight in future then maybe mix up some blood and egg yolk and let them lap it up (ferret vitamin paste is good if you have it) and get them to a vet if you think they have the same.
