Breeding Suggestion??

Recommended Posts

So why exactly do you want to breed? is it because other people said to you about people "in the know" would want pups or is it for you to have another pup for yourself? i would suggest you dont buy a bitch just simply to breed from , i would suggest concentrating on your dog and bringing him on to his full potential as he's only a pup, and IF he turns out such a good dog at whatever he does then you will have these people "in the know" wanting to use him for stud where you will have the opportunity to pick and choose from bitches and get a pup back in lieu of stud, instead of buying a bitch that might be no good and ends up not compatable with the dog when bred, can i also say that there are hundreds of these so called people "in the know" at game fairs and shows, do not listen to every word you are told, suit yourself and dont be taken in by others!!

hey, yes I would eventually like a pup for myself and I wouldn't breed a litter without securing a good few homes for them first. I have bred terriers previously both jack russells and patterdales so I am no stranger to breeding in general but I have never bred from longdogs or sighthounds before. I do plan on bringing my boy on in the meantime and plan to start looking whats out there probably at the end of the year. My question was merely to give me a new angle to consider when selecting the breeding of my bitch.

personally i wouldn't go down the road of buying a bitch, i would be concentrating on my dog for a long while yet, a lot longer than the end of the year. IF you do buy a bitch and you do breed a litter off the said dog and bitch what then? i think by your answers you have made up your mind anyhow on your plans for breeding and buying a bitch so idont think it really matters what anyone suggests.

You are right. I do plan to eventually buy a bitch and breed a litter, my question was for suggestions on crosses for the potential bitch not if I should buy one or not.

Your pups only potential talent shown is at lure chasing. Now, I might be wrong here but the dogs only 14 months old, I don't go to a lot of shows but what I have found is they are mostly summer events. How old was the dog when it did these shows? A dog chasing a bag doesn't make it coursing breeding material, so why breed it? I personally think your either wanting to sell pups or this is a piss take to get a bite..... Me thinks the latter ;)

I have a dog of a similar age out of proper coursing bred parents and theres no way in hell id even be thinking of studding him out unless he turns out truly exceptional... If i want a pup like him i would buy a half sibling. I would advise you to forget about breeding for a few years, see how well he hunts for a few seasons first. lure coursing is meant to be a bit of fun in summer just because a dog is good at it doesnt make it worthy of breeding.

Really hope this is a pisstake.

To the OP: please take a look at just how many lurchers (and longdogs) there are for sale ALL YEAR ROUND. Look at the rescue charities: Lurcherlink is a good example of how many unwanted dogs there are at present. Then have a look on Epupz, Preloved, Pets4homes: you get the picture? Because there is no restriction on how or when lurchers can be bred (unlike KC ) people often think that breeding a litter is an easy way to get a few quid, or, as in your case, because they obviously love their dogs and take pride in them, but don't realise just how difficult it is to find good permanent homes for pups.

Years ago, when I did breed a few lurcher litters, it was relatively easy to find the right kind of homes for them, but now it is getting so much harder to find any sort of permanent home, let alone a good one.

Just because a few people said they might be interested means nothing: talk is easy. Watch those potentially interested people melt away once you have a litter on the ground.

I dont understand the mentality some people have that makes everyone so fascinated with breeding.. How can you get a dog like this and not think 'what can i catch with it?' rather then 'what shall I breed it with?'. As Baw said shows are in the summer months so your pup will have not even finished growing yet when these idiots suggested you breed. The people that are 'in the know' as you put it, that suggested this are not genuine dog people they are idiots!

As Skycat said look at the shelters and dogs homes etc.. they are full of dogs with not enough homes for them, with 000s of them being put down each year. We all like to think that our own dogs are special/better than average etc and its good that you feel this about your own dog...but in my opinion even if a dog were the bag chasing champion of the world it would not in itself, make it worthy of breeding from. Also the only people that would be interested in pups will be show people.

Well said lapin. Is it just me or is there a lot of dumb fucks coming on the hunting life recently? It used to be the school holidays you got this but not now. I'll probably get called a bully again for saying this but honest to f**k. We've got a guy here, dog must have been about 8 months running the lure, supposedly gets praise for it. The dogs now at its hunting age, never been on a rabbit and all he can think of is breeding it!!! So much wrong in that and the clown who said you can't ask a genuine question on here really needs to think before he types.
