elchopchop 0
Whats up people?!? I currently own a Longdog (pure sighthound cross) He is coming up to 14 months old and I have had him since he was 10 weeks. I have taken him to various country and game fairs in my local area and discovered that he has a knack for lure coursing. He hasnt done anything serious, just a few runs on straight courses. I've since been told by various people 'in the know' that if I ever mated my dog names would be on lists well in advance for pups to bring on. I have been thinking about getting another Longdog for a while now (probably at the end of the year) and thought i'd ask you guys your thoughts on crosses for the bitch I will be getting. My dog is Greyhound/deerhound/whippet and is currently around 25TTS. I would like his size and build to come through in the pups as he basically looks like a greyhound sized whippet. So, what do you guys think would be a good cross to look for in a bitch to hopefully get some coursing pups in the future?? Quote Link to post

TOM HEAVY 140
i wreckon the obvious suggestion would be a saluki X, especially for their coursing capabillities, maybe 3/4 saluki 1/4 gray ??? Edited March 4, 2013 by TOM HEAVY Quote Link to post
elchopchop 0
i wreckon the obvious suggestion would be saluki, especially for their coursing capabillities Yeah, i'd had saluki suggested to me before, that and saluki/whippet but I thought that may bring the size of the pups down somewhat, i'm thinking saluki/greyhound might be a better option but dont know anyone thats got one so dont know how they do on the course... vixen 528
So why exactly do you want to breed? is it because other people said to you about people "in the know" would want pups or is it for you to have another pup for yourself? i would suggest you dont buy a bitch just simply to breed from , i would suggest concentrating on your dog and bringing him on to his full potential as he's only a pup, and IF he turns out such a good dog at whatever he does then you will have these people "in the know" wanting to use him for stud where you will have the opportunity to pick and choose from bitches and get a pup back in lieu of stud, instead of buying a bitch that might be no good and ends up not compatable with the dog when bred, can i also say that there are hundreds of these so called people "in the know" at game fairs and shows, do not listen to every word you are told, suit yourself and dont be taken in by others!! 4 Quote Link to post

I have bred terriers previously both jack russells and patterdales so I am no stranger to breeding in general but I have never bred from longdogs or sighthounds before. I do plan on bringing my boy on in the meantime and plan to start looking whats out there probably at the end of the year. My question was merely to give me a new angle to consider when selecting the breeding of my bitch. Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,935
Without the dog having done anything you will simply be a dog breeder, peddler. Not popular,, You take a risk that the pups will be just as shite as the dog you bred it from. Quote Link to post

Obviously if he turns out crap then I wont be looking to breed 'coursing pups' from him, i'm hoping that he comes on leaps and bounds but time will tell... Quote Link to post

IF you do buy a bitch and you do breed a litter off the said dog and bitch what then? i think by your answers you have made up your mind anyhow on your plans for breeding and buying a bitch so idont think it really matters what anyone suggests.
