I was discussing with a vet today about taking a young pup out. She said it would be fine to take the pup out with you to socialize with other dogs if you know they are fully vaccinated at your local walk, eg parks, beach etc.

How many of you let your dogs sociallise with other dogs after its 1st jab.

i normally only jab at 12 to 14 weeks and then socialise with dogs other than my own 2 weeks later

I took my pup out today, didnt really meet any other dogs, only let him walk for about 5 or so minutes, while walking the other dog. The pup had its 1st jab yesterday.

The jabs take a good 10 days to have an effect on the immune system - the first jab gives it a kick, the second reinforces the effect. To be sure, wait for 10 days after 2nd jab. However it depends where you take them - ground that has had no other dogs on for a while is fairly safe, the local dog park isn't. Personally, I dont risk it.

thats what i said to the vet, but she said as long as you know the dogs and its a clean area, you should be fine. even if its jut a quick walk around the block for a shit and wee

Wouldn't risk it myself.

It's not just other dogs, it's what they leave behind.

oh, maybe ill just keep him in the yard for now. fingers crossed he hasnt got anything ffs, and a reminder to change the vet.

I've jabbed pups at 5wks old & never had any problems, would keep them away from well used dog walking areas for a couple of weeks after

i was always told that jabbing a pup before the age of 10 to 12 weeks is pointless as it will pass straight through it and give no protection

vet i use dosent jag untill 10 & 12 weeks and are told to give 2 weeks before taking out always the way i have known it

agree - pup still has immunity from mum until then ( if she is immune) so the pups own immune system doesn't start making its own antibodies til 6-8 weeks

Maybe so, only reason I jabbed that young was due to going away for a while & couldnt rely on mate to jab them. Never had any problems though but something I'd consider in future before jabbing a pup

Wasn't getting at you, or saying you were wrong - it is a very non-exact thing - each pup is different - some make antibodies at 5 weeks, some not til 9 or 10. If you jab them early, and it isn't effective - you won't know. If the pup doesn't pick up a bug, you will never know. Depends on herd immunity - if the majority of the dogs around you are jabbed, the bugs won't last long enough in the environment to cause a problem while waiting for a non jabbed dog to appear ( mainly)
