I am either going to get a .17 hmr or a .22 lr. Could anyone who has both or one of these rifles influence my choice . I know the ammo for the .17hmr is a lot more expensive than the .22lr. kenj 131 Posted March 3, 2013 Report Share Posted March 3, 2013 (edited) It probably depends on the land you are shooting over, wide open with little cover it has to be the HMR due to the power and range of this rifle, while pockets of cover with shots up to 70 yards, then the .22lr is ideal and cheaper ammo. If the land I will be using the rifle on has already been deemed safe by someone else who already shoots there , does it need to be inspected again ? Quote Link to post

That is the best explanation i have heard. But if i had to put a rifle in the truck for those 'just in case' moments, it would be the 22. Quote Link to post

The Duncan 802 Posted March 3, 2013 Report Share Posted March 3, 2013 Sounds about right. Btw I have a .22 and an hmr. The hmr comes out of the cabinet about 3% of the time I need a vermin rifle. The rest of the time I take the .22. The hmr has its use, but it is so damn noisy. Quote Link to post

It certainly will, but you are better than me, I am happy to take 140-150 shots without problem, maybe up to 160-180 if the situation arrises, but for ME, I am happier to stay just short of 200 yards! 100 yard head shots are quite straighforward, I have one lakeside site where we are 100 yards, prone, behind tree cover, shooting slightly down and off the bipod, it is always Canada Goose Head shots, a miss is rare! 100 yard fox too!
