unicornleather 60
Try getting shoulder (bridle shoulder) for a whippet collar, it isn't as heavy duty or as thick as bridle butt but will be easier to handle, shape, cut and work if you are a beginner. Basic tools, you can get away with a stanley knife for cutting and shaping if you are careful, you'll need an edging tool to take the edges off to make a smooth rounded edge that doesn't cut in to the dog's neck. Then you will need to have some edge stain to stain the edges down (not edge dye it's a spirit based dye that is carcinogenic so avoid using any spirit dyes/stains, use water or acrylic based edge stains) You'll need a pricking iron, say 8 to the inch, a crew punch to punch out the hole for the buckle but you can use a round punch to make 2 holes and cut across to meet them up with the stanley knife, you'll need a raw hide mallet to use on the punches, punch out on to either a lead block or wood grain end facing upwards to avoid blunting the punches. You'll need harness needles x 2 , beeswax, linen thread 3/18 cord will be about right, a pair of clams to hold the work in whilst you are stitching, an awl to pierce the holes. This is about all the tools you'll need, to hold the work together while you are stitching it we use tingle tacks but you can use glue, Oz Edited March 3, 2013 by unicornleather
