oldred58 340
I Have been digging with my mate now for, give or take, 45 years, He has never owned a working dog in his life, And never will, He has always said why should he clean and feed walk them, when I do it all, We have got out of some scrapes together over the years, And still today, I all most lost him in scotland, when we had been invited for a week end terrier work, Been out all day hunting,Then back to our hosts home for food, and sort out the dogs, Then to Ale house, on the way back to our host home, wors for wear after a large amount of beer consummed, My mate And our host deceided to have a race to the first lamp post on the road ,With my self being the starter, and a ready steady go, They were off, 10 yards up the road, our scotish friend give him an elbow, And in to the hege he whent,Ater pulling him out,He hobbled back to the house,The next morning he could not get his boot on,His foot was black and blue. Anyway back to digging partners, I know lads who have gone out together a couple weeks,And then fell out, Then go on to slag each others dog off, And go behined the others back, Fall out over whose dog gets enterd first, Or who has the better terriers when pissed up in the pub, Seen it all.I have been one of the lucky ones to have a partner like my mate, Well hes more like a brother. 11 Quote Link to post

stripes 401
23 years ago a young lad came into my yard, hey mister what kind of dogs are those i have seen you about and i live next door? I explained what the dogs did back to him,,,, Can i come out with you mister? my name is paul and yes i will take you a run on the lamp but make sure you ask your folks. Well after that day the young lad called aaron had basically moved into our house day and night he would be there. My wife thought i had adopted a son, aaron must of been 14 then a modest lad sensitive soul and keen as mustard to learn all about night and day work with lurchers and terriers, Anyway years later after many gruelling digs nights out with the lamp we were a team,, the laughs, the mistakes, the hard walk home, the dirty clay hands blisters, he enjoyed every minute. One day aaron never came to the house and like a father to him i got worried,,so i called to there house,,, my buddy had taken his own life this dearest friend was only a young man,, i was so angry this shouldnt happen i said to my wife as i sobbed....I was privelleged to have known him and then carry his coffin past some of the fields that we used to hunt together. His family thanked me for giving him a reason for living,,, its aaron that kept me going with his zest for learning that kept the sport alive,,,,,,, and you dont get that everyday... 17 Quote Link to post
