mad_pom 0
Been 20 years since I was last rough shooting, still have the shotgun (winchester semi) but fancy something quieter! I have a lot of land to available to shoot 100 acres, so something not too heavy to carry around. The BSA Ultra SE looks good for the money, what about scopes ? All advice appreciated. mad_pom 0
thanks for the replies, budget wise 600ish for the gun, 200 for optics ? I also like the look of the BSA R-10 mk2, how does it compare to the ultra ? What optics would you advise, I saw one of Si's awsome youtube vids where he made his own reticule - what scope was that ? thanks again Quote Link to post
Craig Fosse 286
With that type of budget mate you could practically get whatever you wanted, the most expensive isn't always the best, I unfortunately have no I of on the r10 but the ultra is very very accurate, light ideal for hunting and punches far above its weight. The buddy to this now that the BSA has a bolt action is the scorpion, but I don't know how this fares to it. 200 for optics I can't give you much info on but bushnell are very very bang on. I have budget scopes on mine Unfortunatly because my budget was a lot less than yours. Best thing is local gunshops are the way forward to feel and try. Quote Link to post
robwelsh 354
If I was you I'd get a nice rapid for 500-600 , and mtc mamba scopes. These guns are self serviceable with ease, service kits can be had for 1.50 lol so only need a good Allen key kit an adjustable spanners and its fixed in minutes in field. Pretty lightweight my mfr is. Accurate as any other pcp out there. 1 Quote Link to post
Wildling 520
Hw100 or a BSA S-10 would be my first place to start but opinions are like assholes any way so your best of looking around for yourself and trying as many as possible first before making your own mind up mate. Quote Link to post
villaman 9,983
AA s410 ,BSA ultra, new or Hw100kt , BSA R10 , daystate huntsman second hand Quote Link to post
mad_pom 0
would I be correct in thinking longer barrel equates to better accuracy ? Reason I ask the BSA Scorpion T10, which I like a lot, is quite a bit longer than the Ultra SE which I also like. thanks Quote Link to post
villaman 9,983
The ultra has only 12" barrel and one of the most accurate airguns out there 1 Quote Link to post
mad_pom 0
hmm. I must admin the ultra does look really good and not too heavy. Still no idea on the scope/reticule front, could someone link me up with a good reticule/scope combo please. cheers Quote Link to post
robwelsh 354
I rate mtc scope with scb ret. I also rate the ultra, I have one here in .177 , might send it off for abit of love soon lol can feel abit of bounce, an its low powered ish...but accurate as anything out there ... Quote Link to post
gasman1 15
if i were to get a bsa it would be the scorpion se. its got a nice balance, not too big, not too small. has a nice stock and a decent shot count for the size. the s410/510 is also a good gun for the money, but is starting to get a bit pricey. if you're after a smaller gun ie the ultra, i'd also have a good look at the s200 which is a very underated and often overlooked gun. our young un has one in 177 and its a great gun. although they only come in single shot format, you can buy a multishot ad on for aroud 60 quid at a later date if money is a bit tight. i'd say the best allrounder pcp hunting gun around is the hw100. 2x14 shot mags with it, a hw silencer, the mag sits low so you can use a 1 piece mount, the sidelever cocking is second to none and it has a great trigger too. when it comes to scopes you're a bit spoilt for choice. theres loads of decnt scopes out there in the price range you're thinking about. something that does 3-12 or 4-16 is a good mag for most hunting needs. Acuspell 329
Longer barrel does NOT equate to better accuracy, not in air rifles. It does provide better air efficiency though. To get really high power from a given air rifle the makers have to put a longer barrel on. For instance, a Rapid with a 16" barrel might be able to produce 30ft-lbs as a maximum, depending on the valve, hammer and porting, then to get more power out of the same system you would have to increase the barrel length. For sub 12ft-lbs barrel length can be as short as 8" - my Taunus has a 10" barrel and I can hit a pellet hole at 30 yards with it. So don't worry about short barrels for accuracy. BSA make excellent barrels too, it is just a shame their internals are not always to the same standard. An early Rapid is an awesome rifle - I am not so sure about the latest ones, some owners report they are fine, others have problems. Early ones are remarkably accurate and consistent (12ga shell at 100 yards, pellets lined up off the top of a fence at 50), high shot count per fill (250 from a 400cc bottle, in the sweet spot).
