skycat 6,173
Just had a nasty fright: 2 of my terriers out rummaging in the brambles after rabbits, the usual crashing and yipping as they tore after a rabbit, then suddenly silence. Not a yelp, not a sound. I started calling them and after what seemed an age they both staggered out covered in stinging wasps! They just stood there swaying. I was flicking and crunching wasps all over the place, and as luck would have it a bloke I know was passing with his dog: and he started pulling the wasps off the dogs too: the b*****ds were burying into the dog's coats to sting them. Neither dog made a sound, and there were wasps on their heads, ears, everywhere. They couldn't walk, barely stand. We carried them the half mile back to my van, straight home and I've just given them 1/2 a Piriton tablet each and 1/2 a Rymadyl (anti inflammatory/painkiller). And pulled out all the stings we could find. This is only the second time my dogs have been the victims of a wasp attack like that: and I'm definitely going to carry Piriton (antihistamine) with me at all times from now on. Just thought I'd warn everyone: just lucky the dogs weren't actually allergic to the stings, just in shock from the poison and pain. P.S. It is now an hour later and they're fine, just covered in swellings poor things.

madmac 0
Worth carrying as an initial treatment for snake bites. Still need vet asap but it will make a difference.
redmoor 0
I carry Piriton and Pednisilone (steroids) with me now as one of the Vizslas was stung in the roof of her mouth, everything began to swell and luckily i was about 10 mins from the surgery..i was having to drive with my fingers down her throat to keep her airways open as the swelling was that rapid..scary stuff. Hope your dogs are ok..bloody stinging things!
FastDogz 155
OMG skycat thats awful....poor poor babys. We had a incedent with my old cob one day..was up on the stable yard watching her in the bottom field..bucking/rearing for no reason - which was VERY out of charecter.went down to check her to be on safe side and she had loads of wasps on her too only about 15/20 but still enough to caused her agony..you could see the evil little fuckers stinging away there backends going like the clappers trying to give it loads.I just opened the gate and let her bolt off through the middle field and she ran straight onto the yard when i eventually got upto the yard she was tood near the water bath and hose pipe..gradually tiring (im petrified of bees/wasps) so i hosed her down got all wasps off after about 30 mins ..stabled her and gave her some bute.Reported it to yard owner that we had a wasps nest..said hed deal with it..we had 30 horses on that yard and a month later same thing happened again ..they only ever seemed to attack our Romany though never any one elses..fly repelentts didnt work so we bought her a fly sheet which after that we had no more bother. Hope ur dogs stay ok....
Guest nfp20
if you don't have piriton to hand immediately put vinegar on the sting will help to reduce the pain, my bitch went on point and refused to budge to a blasted wasps nest and was stung quite badly gave piriton for the next 24 hours but intitially treated with vinegar direct to the sting site. Guest The Shaman
My mother in law gave me a big laugh about 6 year ago, she was starkers on our sunbed (not a pretty sight believe me) and a wasp stung her on her arse (big enough target). Well the sight of that moon arsed miserable git, leaping around the bedroom with just a teeny towel to cover her modesty made me bad laughing.

skycat 6,173
I must just be lucky: my dogs have had 3 serious wasp attacks over the years but they all recovered within an hour and never had any after effects: the swellings even round one dog's eyes just disappeared within an hour or so. I've heard other people say they've had dogs die after just one sting!
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
A keepers terrier went missing around us about a year ago and was found dead ,stung to death ,whilst digging up a nest of the buggers .
