Carraghs Gem 1,675
It depends on how you cook ( yes, I know - I've a thing for cooking ) but if you think at 1800, what can I cook for a meal at 1830, then you are going to have to use frozen supermarket meals. They are not nice, not tasty, not healthy - but they are cheap, easy and quick. I would rather eat veggie for 4 days a week, and buy decent meat just for a few nights a week, than eat rubbish all week. *getting off soapbox now* I have a solution to your problem... Its called a slow cooker.
terryd 8,538
Butchers all the way if possible. Buy 3 kilo of mince get one free and at a good price and good meat. Chunk of top side for about 12 quid for the family tends be the same price if not a tad cheaper than tesco and so much better. Some chunks of beef shin nice and cheap for casseroles or ox tail for slow cooking. Only thing our butcher is pricey on is chickens so get them from aldi

Agree - I love mine - but how many people these days will think ahead enough to use one - in todays "now" society, they want a healthy, cheap, tasty, hassle free meal on the plate 15 mins after they feel hungry

Found some guinea fowl and a pheasant in the freezer so looking forward to adding some venison for a game casserole.

Thats the lazy way of doing things, i like to do things old school I make lots of soup - a batch that will feed me for the evening meal, then a tub to take to work that night, and a few tubs for the freezer. I havent got a microwave, but I can take a frozen soup tub to work and ping it there for an evening meal. As for bread - yessssss ! nothing like the smell of fresh baked bread - and the chooks love it !
Brewman 1,192
Proper bread is made by hand and you're right it does smell good. It's good to get the kids involved, my 4 year old likes giving a hand then chomping through the end result.
