baw 4,360
Butchers always have a quiet time between christmas, new year and BBQ weather. They use red mix as well as the supermarkets to make the meat look more appealing. Unless you've caught it yourself, you just don't know.

Any beast bred and reard on british farms are tagged at birth and all detail are put on a dater base no being selected for slauter theses records are then past to the slaughter house , On the beast being slauted the carcus is stamped and this is regested , british meat is and allways has been controlled Like any thing in life you get what you pay for

Nik_B 3,790
Shouldnt be buying from a supermarket anyway. They damage local businesses and screw over farmers.

That's all well and good but lets be honest, how many of us have the time to go round all our local producers sourcing all our food locally? I begrudge my once weekly 30 min race around ASDA never mind spending an entire morning and galons of deisel just to support local business. Fact is supermarkets are fecking conveinient! Very true - and I go to mine maybe once every 3 or 4 weeks, to stock up on things like washing powder, shampoo, floor cleaner, flour, butter etc etc - but for the veg and meat for everyday cooking I am lucky that a good nearby farmshop is available, and local markets run well. I know it is easier for me ( no kids, work nights etc ) so I don't mind spending the time doing it, but I do think people have lost the art and ability to use fresh produce like they used to. I think butchers are the only real local producers that everyone has easily available. A large portion of my meat this season was shot or dogged, but I still buy my steak and bacon on my weekly shop. I must start using the butchers, as we have a very good one in the village. My only excuse I'm afraid is that I'm a idle c**t.

Can't dissagree with that, but then the world is a different place to say 50 years ago when that was common practice. I work 9-5 and live on my own (mostly, lol), saturday mornings I'm always busy............. justifying time and money going around farm shops etc is hard when I'm happy enough to put up with supermarket crap for an easy life. Agree, and that is why supermarkets work - it is much easier, and who doesn't want an easier life. When I go to the supermarket, it is on my lunch break on a night shift - so it is 2am - deserted ! radio, no queues, no waiting for tills, bliss ! I don't envy you 9-5

PeakOil 352
Is the supermarket really any cheaper? Our local butcher always knocks a bit off the bill if you spend over £20 cash or chucks a bit extra in and does layaway if you need it. His meat ain't pumped full of water and doesn't shrink tae feck all when you cook it like supermarket 'meat' does, his stuff also lasts longer in the fridge and tastes better. The veg at the local market is cheaper than the supermarkets, fresher, lasts longer in the veg rack and tastes better. The only thing we use supermarkets for is stockpiling any non perishable special offers / alcohol they might have on offer. All that shite flown in / shipped in from all over the globe with a few days left on it before it starts going off and the mass produced 'meat' and ready meals pumped full of allsorts of shite ain't for me. I look at the ingredients on the packet and think to myself if I made it at home would I put those artificial food additives and preservatives in it? If the answer is no it stays on the shelf.

Agree 100% with you, about last September I started buying my meat from the butcher after watching something on the box about supermarket meat that put me off it. Was at the butcher this morning had a chinwag with the butcher and how they are doing a lot better now the horse debacle still ongoing. As said buy a good bit and a little extra gets thrown in and prices are definitely not cheaper in the supermarkets well not noticeably but the quality is noticeable when on the plate. Tescos took a 2 page ad in the Daily Mirror in NI and it was a patronizing crawling exercise, I have no doubt this will cost all the big companies if even just for another month or two. I'm making more of an effort to buy perishable locally even if it does cost a bit more as its important to support the community. Ironically I live less than a mile from the sea but the nearest fishmonger is 25 miles away.
LaraCroft 863
It depends on how you cook ( yes, I know - I've a thing for cooking ) but if you think at 1800, what can I cook for a meal at 1830, then you are going to have to use frozen supermarket meals. They are not nice, not tasty, not healthy - but they are cheap, easy and quick. I would rather eat veggie for 4 days a week, and buy decent meat just for a few nights a week, than eat rubbish all week. *getting off soapbox now*
