Ratting in Lincolnshire

Recommended Posts

We went on our twice yearly trip down to Lincolnshire this weekend to go ratting on our friends chicken farm. We took our Lurcher, our 3 adult Borders, and Tick the spaniel terrier cross. Our friend had his Border and his cross bred terrier.

Arrived at the chicken farm and got to work. Straight away the dogs were marking under a stack of pallets.

Atol (our lurcher) never lies, so after a bit of prodding and poking the first one is acounted for.

Tick gets it! Ticks approx 12 months old and is turning out to be fantastic at ratting.

The dogs started marking a pile of sleepers, so one by one we moved them to the side. An adult with a nest of young.

We then ventured into the sheds which were under water. In the past we've got quite a few rats out of the walls in here. Got the smoker going and had a try.

Got a few more out of here, but it was a little disappointing there weren't more about! I went round the outside with Tick, just caught sight of one sneaking back into the wall, but Tick caught it on the run again!

Dogs marked a few more holes and pallets and we caught a good few more.

Had another nosey around then called it a day and went back to the lads house for a tin of beer, bowl of stew, and a chat, before packing the car up and heading back home to sunny west yorkshire.

All in all, a good laugh, dogs worked well, total tally was 52, so not a bad day really.

Nice one Shell, glad to see you had a good time out with the dogs. I haven't seen many Borders around the part of Birmingham I'm from, but I seen quite a few of them down in Weymouth last week. The ones I seen looked alot stronger than I expected in the flesh, than the impression I got of them from pictures I've seen on the net.

All the best

Paul - We had 2 young lads involved. Tom is 11 and Joe is 12. They seem to enjoy it. Been helping us out down there everytime we've been over the last couple of years. Good to have them out!
