Country Joe 1,411
When I first started Ferreting, there was no locators, nets that i seen were all hemp and nylon, didn't see any spun polyester, or bright colours, all nets were drab. All longnets were traditional, didn't see any quicksets or baskets. now having all these ferreting aids, to the better, Do you now think we have went as far as possible. Or what do you think we will be using in the future? With electronics moving so fast, I think locators could change altogether. Mind you, there's a lot out there including myself who don't rate the present Mark3m, thinking there is room for a lot of improvement. Quote Link to post
Dazzam 239
It's only in recent years that its fairly common to use jill jabs, vasectomy, castration etc. Even when i was growing up things like a complete ferret meal was unheard off. Not only has the technology/gadgets improved our ferreting but as medical science is developed it has impacted how we can care for our ferrets. When we first ferreted years ago it was with one ferret, no locator and you were lucky if you had 10 nets, and they were all sorts of shapes, sizes and materials. They were great old days when you'd maybe walk twenty miles for a days hunting, coming back with half a dozen rabbits you thought you'd died and went to heaven. 3 Quote Link to post
Country Joe 1,411
I agree, Ferret welfare has improved drastically, unfortunately I would feed bread and milk, especially in the Summer. but now with the completes, and as you say Jill jabs etc and forums like this giving out information, ferret welfare has never been better. i was like you Daz, would go out as a lad and return with two rabbits, and be over the moon, then moved on to catching bigger numbers, now going back to catching 4 or 6 and happy with that, as long as i get out with the whippet im a happy Man. 3 Quote Link to post

You still only carry 10 nets and a ferret these days, you leave me to carry the longnets ,locators spade and tbar, the rest of the ferrets and everything else you chancer. And speaking of medical science i hope they can develop a new titanium spine soon cause youv'e wrecked mine with all the carrying i do out ferreting with you 3 Quote Link to post

What equipment they will need to go ferreting and how to use it properly Mate believe this or not ,i was up at the place i get my tripe and beef for the dogs when i bumped into this guy who had a whippet cross dog who was also getting dog meat from the supplier .So i got talking to this sausage head and he was telling me about how good his wee dog was on the lamp ect ect and that he also kept 20 odd ferrets.I also keep working whippets and ferrets and the conversation was going well untill he dropped this fooking clanger into the mix.He says to me that his ferrets never ever kill as he snaps their teeth out with pliers!!!!! I thought he was just yanking my chain but then realised this knob head was serious!.I .So there are still some sadistic morons keeping ferrets out there that belong in a gaol cell or another centuary. I bet he still uses small children to climb into chimneys to clean them for the local manor house. Edited February 27, 2013 by vermin catcher Quote Link to post
Dazzam 239
Can't understand why anybody would either remove the teeth or even put muzzles on ferrets when out ferreting . My opinion is just pack it in and take up another hobby. Quote Link to post
Jamie m 668
Met a guy the other year said he had 60 ferrets oh I said what you want that many for , he replied I didn't have that many but you have to breed them don't you . Quote Link to post

ferretfatcamp 21
mark 3 locaters are sound they take a bit of getting used too they could improve them if they had a direction arrow as when you have dug down you sometimes are near to ferret but dont know which part of hole to dig if the price was cheaper for colllers that would be good as well a better shape for locater as well would be fine as they fall out of pocket when digging Quote Link to post
