Lancashire Hunter 22
Hi guys tryed giving my ferret some raw lambs liver and she want eat it. Why could this be? I gave her a raw egg and she loved it. But with the liver she just sniffed and licked it but would not eat it. My mate reccons that she might have been a pet but the guy I got her off said before I even told him what it was for said she is a worker and worked her him self. Could she just be fussy? Plus when I try to put a collar on her she just fights with it to get it off. And I don't want to use her if she keeps doing that. What should I do? Quote Link to post

lapin2008 1,587
Liver is an acquired taste mate even for dogs one of mine is not keen on it. As socks says if you give it chicken/rabbit/pigeon it wont turn up its nose Quote Link to post
Guest norseman
same with mine, my hob will eat anything but my jill can be fussy. my jill will also do anything to get a collar off her (when its on her neck), so i just put it behind her two front legs and she gets straight to work. no messing. Im surpirised you`ve not lost a collar yet bud. Like socks said, just put it on them and leave them to get used to it. You can do this "training" at home so theres no f***ing about when you go out with them. Quote Link to post
Guest norseman
why would i lose a collar when its still securely on the ferret though? believe me bob the jill will not keep it on her neck, it works fine around her torso. never had a problem with the hob's collar though, Quote Link to post
Papa g 14
Liver once in as while is ok but I've found too much can give the shites, as to locator collars I've found the locator collar on a harness works well. Quote Link to post

Feck, Ive had them really tight on the neck - and they have still slipped off. Its not happend this season, thank feck as its a right pain digging to just a collar, if you can find it. If it works for you bud... I just haven`t come across it before.. Quote Link to post

As someone has already said just perservere with the collar, she'll soon get used to it...and you don't have to wait until you take her out working....you can get her used to wearing a collar before you take her out. You may need a hand until you get comfortable with putting the collar on at first as some ferrets can struggle a fair bit in the hand. As for liver even when my ferrets eat the liver from rabbits their dung is a lot looser and runnier. If you're struggling to get raw meat for your ferret chicken wings are cheap alternative. Lancashire Hunter 22
I don't really struggle putting a collar on her. Its just getting her to keep it on. I have some old drain pipe in her hutch and when she has it on she goes in it to the other end puts some of the collar on the end and drags it off. If after a couple of weeks if she want keep it on. Then I will have to get a harness to put a tracker on. Quote Link to post
