blackgreyhound 206
thinking about getting back into lurchers been out several times in the last few weeks looking at ground thaht i hunted in the early seventies .went across to a place called mentmore walked around ledburn then walked over to slapton and a place called billington.all in bedfordshire.see 1 hare very few rabitts plenty of pigeons 4 chinese water deer plenty of ducks hardly any moorhens .walked up and down loads of winter barley no hare forms hardly any rabitt diggings ,the ground has a very empty strange silent feeling to it feels like its been neutron bombed.used to be able to course a hare and 3 or 4 more would get up dureing the course.wondering if its worth getting a dog seems so little to chase .i feel its not courseing thaht should have been banned but pestecides cutting down heges and shooting hares with firearms.at this rate there soon will be nothing left to look at let alone chase Quote Link to post
jukel123 7,957
I know what you mean. There seems to be a lot less game about than there was. Everywhere is closed off too. Nowhere to roam without being treated like a criminal. Quote Link to post
blackgreyhound 206
this year on my permission took out my 12ftlbs airgun only shot one or two a week as i didnt want to make to big a dent in the population .september came fields were crawling with rabitts .i thought right time to take a few .myxy came now im lucky to see one or two had to put the gun in the attic as to few left to shoot.must leave whaht is left to try to recover .to many mobile phones to many do gooders police up my way waste thousands flying in helicopters and driveing around in 4x4 vehicles.instestead of chaseing real criminalls.now i know how the north american indian felt when his buffalow were killed.the govermeant love to let builders build on the countryside destroying the habitats of badgers hares deer etc .where money is concerned animal rights are soon forgotten.i never see ther rspca or petra protest over these huge houseing developmeants.but you course a hare then you area major crimminal Quote Link to post

beast 1,884
i have permission near the places you have mentioned, places all the way from near luton to north of milton keynes and i have to say its the worst year i can ever remember. no rabbits anywhere, few hares 9although the numbers have been picking up over the last 5-6years) but loads of foxes and deer-typically we are not allowed to run them any more. i only use my dogs for ferretting and mooching these days and unfortunately i have a sapling pup which i have been trying to bring on over the winter but had very little for her to catch. i put the lack of rabbits down to the ridiculously wet summer and autumn, june/july rabbit numbers were up and i had to shoot over a lot of places i would norm ally leave for the autumn ferretting. i hope the numbers will pick up again if we have a decent summer, you might be better off to wait before getting a pup to see how it is. as for the pressure from antis, you're ok as long as you're only doing rabbits the problem is getting permission in the first place, i have found that there are very few lurcher men round here but as a result most landowners are very suspicious and have no understanding of hunting with dogs.
