Its Been A While....

Recommended Posts

Things have moved on a bit since the 90's by the looks of things and after reading up on here it looks like a fair bit has passed me by. I used to love my old airgun, an HW77k in .22 with a bisley 4x40 scope on top. Weighed a bit and old hat by todays standards but it was a massive step up from my first ever arigun (Diana .177) and it's replacement (some nameless BSA in .22). Back then there was none of this head-shots only on rabbits / pigeons etc, but then my equipment didn't really cater for it - still, most things dropped but I can't help thinking things have got too technical now.

Anyway... to the point.

I've been toying with the idea of getting an airgun for some time but, despite being relatively savvy on shooting related topics, have been totally snow-blinded by the amount of marketing and statistics which now dimonate magazines in this area and my memory of the days gone by is a litle hazy. My neighbour is well into them has recently moved onto some singing and dancing £1400 computer controlled Daystate and is shifting his 'old' HW100 (I say old, its less than 6 months from new and looks like its never been fired). Its got a large, ambidextrous style thumbhole and a 6-24-56 hawke sidewider on top. He's bringing it over on Saturday............. but.......

- I think i've got a good deal but would appreciate what value you would put on this set up... before I part with the cash?

- Is this model of airgun idiot-proof or will I need to read a fooking great manual first? - If yes I can't be dealing with it.

I know how it is with a lot of posts like this - people ask a question that won't either influence their decision or they already know the answer to. If you can be arsed i'd appreciate it.

See them go for anything between £550 and £750, always hold their price well.Does it come with charging gear? If you do get it you wont be disappointed with it, it is a very popular gun. A few of the lads on here have them, they will be happy to answer your questions.

Two highly respected bits of kit there. Many air gunners aspire to own such quality gear as your mate is selling. Check out the new price of both items, if the asking price is reasonable and you can afford it – go for it, you won’t go wrong. Don’t forget to budget for an air pump or compressed air cylinder and valve though!

I was in a very similar position recently - originally had a 77K back in the early 80's, loved it to bits. Recently came back to air rifle shooting and analysed every last bit of information I could find. OK, choice made, it's going to be a Air Arms S400 Superlite in .177. Off I trot to the gunsmiths and when I get my hands on it, it just doesn't feel right. Alright, I know it's an extremely accurate bit of kit capable of placing pellet on top of pellet, but with all the paraphernalia of tanks and bottles and valves and kit - and then the reports of leaking valves etc.. I'm still in two minds. That's when I spot a familiar, but very radical shape. Thew Weihrauch HW 97KTS, a synthetic thumb hole stock, 97 carbine in nickel plate finish! Well, bought that along with a Hawke Eclipse SF30 'scope and boy am I a happy bunny. Every bit the 77K's successor, quality oozing out of every pore. OK, it may not be as clinically accurate as some of these PCP devices, but you know you've got a gun that will last you a lifetime and still be performing at 100% when they carry you (and me!) out in a box.

I know I'm glad I had time to stop and think.

Good luck with whatever you decide on.

As much as I enjoy knocking Ol' Fritz the build quality of their rifles and optics has always impressed me. I'm lucky enough to have a dream pigeon scenario for the airgun out the back of my house which i'll post about later once i've got a few on the floor.
