foxwarren 0
Hi I am new to this forum and am looking for advice and know how on how to start my terriers ratting. They are both from a long line of working dogs. I have seen one of them, the dog who is a 12 to 15 inch broken coated russell dispatch a rat very effectively. the other a bitch who is very small loves rabbit holes and although ive never seen it they are killing rabbits between them when they go to ground. I asked the breeder what all the blood was about on the dogs and as an expert life long terrier man assured me they were killing rabbits. I would like to see the dogs working and ratting and would appreciate any pointers on the subject . I live in North Devon. Thanks in advance Foxwarren. Quote Link to post

Guest MOLLY
Hi I am new to this forum and am looking for advice and know how on how to start my terriers ratting. Ratting/rabbiting terreirs are not classed as working terriers more sporting (dont ask ive had the same argument millions of times ) Now all that aside...and please just leave it there. The lifelong terrier man may well have done things his way for years but i would not have been happy at watching his dogs ripping chunks out of rabbits underground he can neither see nor retrieve nor dispatch them humanely If you can think of specific questions regarding one subject at a time im sure there are loads of people who will help as much as they can. Like do you intend to work your terriers with ferrets? Or will they be for bushing rabbits? Where are you planning to rat...farms, riverbanks, hedgerows? MOLL. Quote Link to post
martin 332
Have you not got someone that can take you out with there dogs(experienced)so your dogs can see it done and start getting a bit eager(keep them on a lead for the most part)and finally let them rag a few, and, then let them try to catch a few. They will soon get the hang of it,after all it is natural for them. I think you were getting a bit of ribbing from the others, because it does sound a bit like your mate was having a bit of a laugh at your expense.Good luck with them................................Martin. Guest Leveller
I know the breeder of your dogs foxwarren and in his day he was undoubtedtly one of the best terriermen to have walked the earth, ( I also wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him but that's another story ) He hasn't bred a working dog for years. Where abouts in North Devon are you send me a pm if you like, we do quite a bit of ratting in East Devon and South Somerset and if you wanted a day out it wouldn't be to hard to arrange for you.
