How do you teach a dog to jump hedges?

I once saw a oouple of saluki types sailing over 4 foot hedges with plenty of clearance and obviously enjoying it.

It certainly helped them get their quarry.It's another weapon in a dog's armoury if it can be taught.

I've never been able to teach this to a dog. Not only have they to come to terms with the height but also the spread across the top of the hedge.

Any tips?

I've got a Fen dog so doesn't need to jump and doesn't need to be stockbroken...happy days :-) lol

I found that starting on small obstacles works well, ie to get to food and gradually build it up. I've also found that by using the same fence and placing a jacket over it and getting the pup confident jumping this, then gradually stop covering the fence and then get the pup confident as possible at the one place then they tend to be confident at jumping any fence/obstacle.

Any tips? jukel jumpind and prep for the hedge etc is pretty much the same length and height is needed as we know , i try and teach this to all mine , some do well other not to well . i usually start as the norm small obstacles around the yard small hedges cut some hazel out the hedge and make a few hurdles alter the heights to suit .also some seem to neglect length jumping as welps brooks drainage ditches etc when the i feel the animal is ready for more substantial type jumps i find a ditch with a broken hedge plus wire in between one the animal can see though and over and proceed to practise once jumping over and through the obstacle daily practiseall fun and games with the reward ball bit beef jerky etc . i then move on to small hawthorn hedge only a few feet maybe three feet and perhaps two foot across and move on with thew animals progress and age . i have allways found the quick thinker who can negotiate in a blinkof an eye the very best at crossing country in full throttle , self preservation types when jumping hedges etc are and can be a sihght to behold , the thrust from the take off can be heard very clearly one of the best hedge jumpers i have owned was a saluki type , many moons ago and she would also tackle any teeth . atb bunnys.

Keep it on a lead, say up , or over with gentle tug on lead with bit of a run up, something about 3 ft, within a week build up slowly it should jump most things
