Blaise 2,322
It's so difficult to catch a hare with hounds that the team is allowed to hunt from september to the end of march. The team must be invited by the land owner. In France you can't use some dogs which can run faster than hare. The Greyhounds are banned. In fact, the hare is chased until it made a mistake. In most of the hunts, hare wins. Success may be between 10% or 25% if the pack is good. Some are hunting without any success during all the season, just for the fun of running with dogs. This team is hunting twice a week, sometimes three days. 3 Quote Link to post
CorkyJohn 808
Good pics as usual blaise, when does the hare hunting stop? Quote Link to post
Blaise 2,322
Good pics as usual blaise, when does the hare hunting stop? The French territory is organized with 101 departements. The hunting season with shotgun may be different on each departement. Usually, we hunt hare with shotgun from the end of september to the beginning of october, a short season. But the season for the hunt with hounds is the same every where : from the 15th of september to the end of march. The same season for deer, boar, roe, fox, rabbit and hare with hounds. Be careful, it's a bit hard to have the authorizations to be able to hunt with hounds. There are rules concerning number of dogs, housing for dogs, lands... Most of the teams hunt just one quarry, some are hunting two. Despites these rules, there are more and more teams for hunting hare with hounds. May be 140 or 150. Quote Link to post

Concerning size "anglo-francais de petite vènerie" (48-56 cm) is under the foxhound (58-64 cm according FCI). The "anglo-francais" and "poitevin" used for deer or boar are bigger (60-70 cm). What happens if caught hunting the hare with lurcher in France ? I don't know, money at first, may be the end of your hunting license. It's dangerous to play with the law concerning hunting. Population of hares have decreased seriously since the 70's. So the season of hunt with shotguns is very short. Three week-ends at the end of september. But hunting with hounds is yet possible until march. Are the hare hounds true to there scent ? They must ! The first defense is to run fast, the second one is the change. The hare will try to find roe deers or another hare. A very good pack of hare hounds will be able to stay on the first hare. A change hare/hare is a big risk at the beginning of the hunt, but when the hare become tired, it smell a bit different for the hounds. Men have to stay near the hounds in order to punish each error. moxy 617
Which ones bulldozer? That would be the three quarter bred jacker that didn't have the wind to keep up with the hounds. Slowly followed by the rest of the THL Heinz 57 disabled mongrel club. On a serious note. Absolutely brilliant pics. Blaise. Thanks for sharing. 1 Quote Link to post
