DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
Got home from a hard nights graft for my dog, and found a broken nail. It was split in 3 directions.Could see the quick.. and so I thought to save him caching the splits ends on carpet and such I would cover the nail in super glue to hold it all together and stop it getting worse. 2 days later he is limping and on closer inspection the glue and split nail has obviously gone solid and is rubbing between his toes and making it sore. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the glue needs to be removed, cream applied to the sore, and toe and nail bandaged....? Only trouble is removing the glue from the sore area. I'm not going to use nail varnish remover. Is there anything else which wont irritate the area. Going to try warm water first for as long as he puts up with. Cheers.... Guest thebigdog
a hair dryer, the heat will soften the glue, then wipe off

lapin2008 1,587
I would try use a bit of sand paper or nail file to sand off the sharp glue bits, I am not sure that the hair drier will soften super glue that stuff is pretty invincible I would have thought that not gluing the nail would have been the best option. Even as a worse case scenario the nail would drop out and then grow back a month or so later and with a bit of salty water along the way would have been fine
TOPPER 1,809
if its superglue just soak it in warm water it will soon go grey and peel off
Kay 3,709
A tip i was given for dealing with split nails was to cut the top off a teabag & bin the leaves out of it, then cut a few strips of the teabag paper & glue them to the nail where its been split , using minimal glue , done it a few times on my male greyhound & used this method on my own nail & it sets great & i just filed it a little bit to ensure there were no rough edges
skycat 6,174
If you sealed in some dirt, even invisible bacteria when you super glued the nail, then that will cause an infection: one of the main reasons I don't mess about trying to glue claws: it is almost impossible to get them sterile. Much better just to cut the claw off short above the splits: stand by to hold a pad of cotton wool over the stump as it will bleed like hell, but soon stops. Then just keep the foot clean and dry until the quick has hardened off: about a week. Give it a week on the lead and then it should be healed enough for a little light running.
DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
Great help, managed to get the glue off by standing him in warm water for 10 mins then pulled it off! Just a lump of glue stuck to hair in between toes rubbed the other side sore. Thanking you all
