skycat 6,174
Does the swimming do the trick bill ? Just asking because I had a friend who swam for Wales at the Commonwealth Games and he said he was fit for swimming but couldn't run if his life depended on it - if he was being chased he'd just have to run to some water and swim away Maybe it's different for dogs though? Just wondering because I think one of mine would swim but I haven't particularly focussed on it as a fitness technique. Very nice dog too snoop. Look forward to seeing his progress. I think it's a good way of keeping them active and happy during the summer, but obviously it doesn't do anything for their feet regards toughening them up: couple swimming with trotting by a bike for example and you've probably got a good all round body work out: though of course nothing beats galloping for getting galloping fit. Guest MOLLY
I do exactly the same Mine get raw with a handfull of eukanuba hight performance and i feed by eye. But i never feed bread and pasta very rarely, they only get pasta the rare time i cook their meat, thrown in with a thick gravy. I enquired with a greyhound man about pasta once as i could remember something not right about feeding it to working dogs and this was the reply... its best not to feed large ammounts of it because it increases the chances of the dog cramping up & it also increases a substance that calm's the brain. A handful in their diet is ok but in the last feed before taking them out(6-8 hours at least) i would cut the carbs right down. Far too many people think you can 'carbo-load' as humans do but its something to do with the way its stored or converted within the body that makes it ineffective for dogs. To try & increase stamina (along with training) you can add a tbsp of glucose to their feed each day, but just withdraw it as above. A blood saturation dose of VitC will also help delay fatigue. snoopdog 1,256
THE MAN IS RIGHT IN ONE RESPECT ABOUT THE CARBS MOLL AND MINE GET FED AT NIGHT SO ITS AT LEAST 10 HOURS BEFORE THEY WORK AGAIN ... CARBS TAKE LONGER TO DIGEST I.E.PASTA BUT LURCHERS ARNT GREYHOUNDS AND ARE TRAINED IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT WAY .. AND IF YOU ARE DOING STEADY ROAD WORK IMO PASTA HELPS ..I ONLY FEED IT TWICE A WEEK WHEN TRAINING THEM ANYWAY. BUT THEY GET A FULL MEAL WHICH USALLY CONCISTS OF TUNA WITH EITHER MACKREL OR SARDINES AND PASTA .......IAM NOT SAYING IAM RIGHT BUT IT SEEMS TO WORK FOR ME SO I SHALL CARRY ON ... ALL THE BEST SNOOP .. Quote Link to post
