Had a special 6 for about 8 years now and very impressed, it has been through so much and not let me down. Skiing at minus 14 I had the vents open! One thing its designed for when you are moving and generating your own heat. So if you are still and its very wet its worth having a light weight waterproof to stick over the top. Would highly recommend it. Not too sure on how the alternatives work but when/if this one wears out I will defiantly be replacing with another buffalo. the montane extreme is very good. had mine 7 years and its been very tough wearing.

Had both the montane and the buffalo jacket. Not much between them the montane cost more and had the crotch strap. The buffalo doesn't need one. The montane has reinforced patches on elbows. Neither came with hood which is a pain. I think I like the buffalo the best.
