it always seems that the albinos are the most steady. The polecat colloured ones always seem to be a little skittish at times. Have any of you found this

[i would have to agree with this,i hunt 2white ferrets not albinos[black eyes] and a polecat when im out i hunt them alltogether which works for me But i have noticed that the polcate has a wee play about at the mouth of holes were the whites get stuck in.Dont get me wrong shes a great we worker, the only downside to the whites when their called they take their time as for the polie is out like a terrier!/quote]

They're all the same. The varying abilities are down to the individual ferret, and absolutely nothing to do with its colour. I've had ferrets from the same litter two of which worked really well, yet their sister was useless. They were polecat coloured. I've had better since, and worse. They were all different colours.

to be honest i was having the same conversation with another ferreter the other day ,we got on about what type of ferrets we both prefered ,colour ,sex ,age ,and why we prefered a certain type and size ect.

and i commented that over the last 4 or 5 seasons i had mainly prefered working polecat types and silvers ,4 years ago i only had 1 albino jill who was 3yrs old at the time(so is now aged 7 yrs).

2 years ago i got another albino hob of a small to medium size .

over time i would say the albino ferrets have turned out to be slightly more dosile but have worked tirelessly ,they have always worked well but at a slightly slower pace ,ive found them very steady and easy to work and they have rarely killed in .

on the other hand the poley types seem far more active ,work faster and are more lightly to kill in a and become hand shy,im rehoming 2 polecat types at the end of this season one kills in nearly everytime hes entered and has to be dug out hes always been the same ,at 5 yrs old hes now also become hand shy and almost impossible to catch ,i also have another polecat type jill to rehome ,i purchased her from a guy off this site as a good working jill ,from almost the first time i used her she was hand shy .

ive been so impressed with the albinos that im going to breed a litter this year, i know people wont agree with what ive written but its not the first time ive had to rehome hand shy polecats type ferrets .

Albinos can't see to good do when they exit the warren there not as nimble where as a dark eyed ferret is looking about can see beter so is more active , but when they put there noses to the ground there the same determined to get off on the scent , my black eyed Jill is quick as lightning little bitch she be in the next warren if your not quick ,

all ferret regardless of eye colour have poor eye sight and it is found that in general they can only see approx. 12 " but all have a good sense of smell but dark eyed whites and silvers are more prone to being deaf as is ferrets with warrenbourg syndrome (white line on head)
