Ferreting Dog

Recommended Posts

Some nice hounds there Joe!, am with you on this beddyx all the way for me from now on! even though i have a salxgry beddywhippxcolliegry i all so have a pure beddy bushing dog with a right nose on her but she knocking on a bit now and hopefully gunner put her back to a pure beddy in the summer in the hope of keeping a bitch back and this will be the basis of all my future lurchers!! so the first cross beddyxwhipp would be my choice for ferreting and general mooching

Not trying to bring your post down Lurcherlad, but this type of question has been asked lots of times. eg whats the best type of lurcher, whats the best cross etc. Although its important to be able

I like a dog with a good splash of collie/herding breed for the concentration among other things. But what ever the mix you need a good bit of luck, as you can't polish a turd. A good ferret dog needs

like CJ i've a soft spot for the Bedlington lurcher myself, they suit me anyway, nose, early pace and the enough heart to hit hedges hard, all essential in a decent ferreting dog. though many others

Sirius out of interest does that dog carry rabbits like that all the time ?

No, like most dogs he will often carry them by the shoulders, but as long as they come back in good nick I don't really care how he carries them back  I guess I am lucky that he is pretty soft mouthed.

Is it just me or do you not see many pics of these great ferreting terrier x carrying rabbits gently :hmm: Think every beddy/terrier x I have seen has been a cruncher?

Good hunting Sirius

I only asked coz my collie x if he picks up one thats abit lively he carries it back like that too.

I also agree about the terriers bieng crunchers. Mind you people say that about bull crosses being hard mouthed but mine ritrieves them live and well.

One dog I used to know, used to crunch the head of the rabbit and kill if it was an awkward customer, then pick the rabbit up and bring it in, I have seen the dog do this several times . Good really as you still had a nice saleable rabbit

by beddy x aint a cruncher but she aint soft mouthed either. she bruises the meat but doesnt break any bones or skin. if she gets a big fecka that she cant handle she will shake it like a rat to calm it down :icon_redface:

My pup beddi whippet ( sire was the whippet so technically does that make her a whippet x Bedlington? ) took her out ferreting loads from 4 months old onwards she started to show good signs when on her own but when other dogs present she was more interested in being a pup and chasing the other dogs....sadly haven't got time for ferreting ATM so she will be used for lamping once she gets her head around it a bit better, I've heard nothing but praise from People who own these dogs for ferreting, better than a whippet or another lurcher for that matter? I don't think so but great little companions all the same. any way hers a couple piks of mine flo-1.jpg flo-2.jpg F82E2081-6CF4-4F4E-9BD9-0AD4B2928244-285 http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/t422/BS40liam/F00406C4-1964-4D5E-89AC-D00D7D2801D5-613-0000006F063106E7.jpg

If Im honest I never really cared about the crunching (apart from the sound), I've never sold rabbits so wasn't a problem. Could be a bit temperamental and sulky at times but very game and great little dogs
