Had A Run......

Recommended Posts

this morning at daybreak. Put the pup on the slip and crept up the side of a long hedge, when out comes a bunny about ten yards in front. Slipped the dog who was off and on it's tail! He boxed the bunny away from the hedge but it got around him a little further on and was through. He ended up chasing two more rabbits a bit further on with no real hope of catching.

I will say rabbits can't half shift on flat ground with short grass. I thought the young dog did well though, and he came straight in to a quiet whistle after I let him continue his run on the far side of the field.

Inexperience showing on the part of owner and pup, but we were both pleased with his performance.

He's coming along well. This is a huge part of the enjoyment of owning a dog like this for me. The training, watching him come on, and watching his natural skills develop.

We'll catch a few next season.

Hedges and young dogs are a bad combination. Unless you think the dog will catch it don't slip. Won't have done any harm but you don't want to make a habit of it. Well done anyhow, good to see your both having fun mate

 that's the problem mate, they learn that rabbits ain't worth chasing, start choosing runs give it a couple of months, place will be full of easy rabbits. Forget the season pish, that don't apply to training young dogs. Pick rabbits out in the open

Mugs all the way where pups are concerned, you might be impressed with your pup mate, but your pup won't be impressed, too many chases and no catches is a recipe for disaster. Pick your victims and try your best to stack the odds in your pups favour.

Fair comments guys - I learn fast.
