Recommended Posts

Hello all I have recently made the step up from my crappy co2 to pcp I have BSA superten and have been having fun plinking about

I got some pellets jammed down the barrel like a clown , so after I had them removed and the barrel sorted and cleaned I was advised to put a 100 or so pellet through her to re- lead it up ,

I have put about 200 though and only just today started getting groups were I would like i just want to go hunting lol

Ill let u guys tell me am I ready this was at 42 ish yards (walked out no range finder yet )

An I didn't have a penny so next smallest thing was a rimple of a can

10 shot group out side no wind breaker rested on a wall

That's not some bad shooting at all mate, just one thing to bear in mind? Have you been shooting at 42 yards as your zero or is that the furthest u went back because that's a far zero if it is? You will know yourself when your ready to shoot, sometimes it's not all about groups, I for one loose concentration when firing at a circular target for more than 3 shots however I know for a fact when the shot needs to be placed its placed there. I am not a great lover of target shooting, but sometimes it needs to be done.

Google rabbit anatomy there is a good picture on their of a decent sized rabbit showing his anatomy, same with a pigeon, print some out and stick them up, lie down and take 3 shots, two at the brain, one at the heart, and imagine its real, if you hit them all, your ready.

Shoot at different distances to know your point of aim, it's ok being a good shot at your zero but if u didnt know from 10 yards on wards your pellet trajectory and spin then there's no point. Have a look at my post hold overs/under it might help u out.

Another thing, what do u plan on hunting?, if its woody's, or birds then remember u will rarely be in the prone. Everyone will tell you it's ok to shoot in your back garden nice and warm on a shooting rest but when your stretched out balancing on your toe with one hand holding onto a zip line trying to get your eye on a woody..... shooting is a different story :D

Best of luck to you mate and I hope you bag something soon.

Ill be trying my luck at woodies and rabbits and tree rats if I see any I really want to eat one my mate reckons its the best meat out the lot ?? Ill go out with my lamp and practice in the dark with my shooting sticks first because I know that a whole new ball game to in the dark with only 2 little eyes to go by

Cheers for your advise pal it's much needed

What pellets did you use. It can be the most important part of the whole outfit.

I have just got the right ones for my rifles and it is a revelation.

I have a custom bulk fill smk xs78 in .22 that was shooting like a shotgun till I tried RWS Superdomes, It now one holes 5 shots at 20m all the time.

I use 4.52 defiant hft in my hw 99s and they are super accurate.

Very good advice from Craig

It's all very well hitting groups at your zero, but you need to learn what the different distances are, and what holdover/under you will need to hit the target at those distances.

Set your Zero at about 30 yards, then move back to 35, then 40, and move forward to 25, 20 etc, practice learning where your aim points are at different distances, when you can judge from about 15 to 50, THEN you'll be ready to shoot living animals.

Hi bandog.

The good and commendable thing I read here is, you have taken the trouble to get your shooting up to a standard where you have every chance of humanely killing your quarry with clean, accurate shots, before you take it out on living creatures.

Some so-called men around actually sneer at the notion of respect for the welfare of a live animal, even if it is a pest, but, those sort of people are usually deeply unpleasant and have a cruel streak hiding weak and feeble characters. I want nothing to do with any of that sort and neither should you.

It's not about how far you can shoot but how accurately well.

Most misses occur at short ranges, like as little as 5 to 15 metres/yards. Zero your rifle at 25 metres and see where you are at targets both close and further away than this. When you can hit a 2p-sized group at all likely ranges as your quarry will be seen at, you'll need no further advice from anyone!

Great respect to you for your care with your shooting.

Nice grouping at 42yrds

Is it a 22 or 177cal?

Try zeroing at 30 yards that's the generally accepted zero for .22 or 35yrd for .177

(although you can have whatever you want)

My 22 super ten loves H&N FTT and Accupels - and with practice these rifles are more than capable of putting every pellet through the same hole

Lovely rifle, hope you enjoy it & thanks for the pics

Try those mate also depending on money there is a pellet swap page on here, I have some bisley magnums I could send to see if ur rifle likes them,as for woodies I actually think its my favourite meat, don't lamp for ur first time hunting u want to get used to shooting in the day, stalking etc, sunrise is ur best bet or an hour and a half before sunset to give the rabbits u scare off a chance to come out when u can still see. Shooting sticks are good, remember when shooting down or up over 45 degrees u need to hold over for example my zero shooting downhill changes from 30 to 35 and at 20 yards I'm almost a Mill dot hold over. Definatly shoot at 10 to 40 yards and find ur points of aim, check my post out for a reference!

Sounds like your hooked and being sensible about it to.....good!

http://www.downsizer.net/Articles/Wild_food/Paunching_%26_Skinning_a_Rabbit/

How to paunch and skin a rabbit properly.....also dispatching a rabbit if you happen to injure it, ur starting out so let's face it its going to happen sometime......the quickest way to do it is reload and shoot it again, but sometimes they will just lay still out of shock or fright, pick it up by its back legs and let it dangle down with its nose pointing away from you, draw a line through the back of its neck down to to the bottom of its chin and karate chop it on that angle on the back of his neck, you should hear it snap.... I do this to save air, if in doubt shoot it in the head again.....sounds graphic but it has to be said.... Wood pigeon same detail except you grab it's head and twist and pull, first few times you might pull its head off but U get the jist of it, pigeon u can only really eat the Brest meat but I roast them and get everything off the bird because I love the meat so much.

Let me know if you have anymore question or pm me, I'm always willing to help

Cheers for the link pal

Ill prob get some of them then mate or get on the swap tread u would think BSA would make the best for a BSA but life is not that easy is it lol

I have skinned and gutted rabbits before I have been into lamping with dogs for a while I have also done a bit of ferreting ...I have only ever breasted a pigeon but I have done my self a duck plucked gutted cooked the lot but I never shot it lol

It's squirrels am intrested in tasting I have been told its really nice ?? Pigeon is lovely and rabbit is lovely to tastes better [BANNED TEXT] u catch it it shoot it your self

Squirrels aren't that much different than rabbit to be honest, they are a lot harder to skin, I would advise skinning the moment one is shot because as soon as their body heat goes the skin is stuck like glue, their tough little buggers even after death! Yer unfortunately pellet finding out is a mundane and can be expensive thing! However at 42 yards if you can it hat coke top I'd stick with them and keep the barrel leading, will probably still improve, if its a new rifle u need at least a couple of thousand pellets to bed it in anyway..... U want to zero at 30 yards if I was you mate it makes ur trajectory curve over all the yards smaller I think. One of the main things from this is remember have fun! If ur shooting at targets, no more than an hour u get something which I call shooting tired, where u have been concentrating over and over down th scope. Shot a good group and have a coffee chill out, try another.

Also it would be great to go on YouTube, hunters vermin and vermin debaters tv with si (Zini) on here have some amazing tips, little things like getting material like hard sponge and hole punching holes into, this U can use to put ur pellets in and then tie it around your neck, saves taking a tin of pellets rounds with you and keeps the pellets from getting damaged.

Also shows you a lot to do with stalking, how rabbits behave what to do in different situations etc etc.

Youre right about squirrels being a pain to skin when theyre cold craig, but personally I think theyre worth the effort,i think theyre much tastier than rabbits. Best slow cooked cos the meat can be tough, although after an hours cooking I dry them on kitchen roll then deep fry th em in peri peri based breadcrumbs for a KFC style treat. Or any chinese duck recipe is fantastic
