gnasher16 30,025
I understand what you're saying but that gobshite must have no pride as a man or a player to do what he done. Well IMO anyway. Theres cheats in all sports mate...............just most sports dont have a thousand cameras picking up every single detail of every last movement. Rebel 833
Hurling, football, rugby, etc, highlight the contrast in the manner in which these sports are played when compared to how some professionals play soccer. You are right about getting the tough man image out of soccer, but as you well know all of the great teams had tough men on the team and some of the best players, while skillful could certainly take plenty of stick as well, which probably made them the players that they are/were. So both are a requirement in all sports to be the best, whether it be soccer, hurling or table tennis, imo?
gnasher16 30,025
I dont agree Rebel.....look at the supposedly greatest side to ever play the game the 1970 Brazil side where was the " tough men " in that team ?.......The game tonight Utd v Real Madrid two of the great sides where are the tough men ?......Barcelona ? ok Puyol can put it about if he needs to but hardly in the Vinny Jones/Jimmy Case/Norman Hunter bracket is he...... Its only us Brits who have this " tough man " ......" get stuck in " attitude.......and thats why we are still lagging behind in world football.....dont get me wrong i love the excitement and speed of our game.....but i accept at the highest level its not about being tough its about being good. Imho, Its about both.....but "tough" is probably the wrong word to use, I would say mental & physical strength and unflinching commitiment What you say makes a lot of sense mate and I think there is a difference between just putting it about for the sake of being a "tough guy" and being a hard, committed, skilful player. To me, a fully committed tackle at full speed, genuinely focused on winning the ball without another thought in your mind is totally different to just kicking people. Injurys are sometimes an unfortunate by product. Now I have never boxed and you have but I am sure you never threw a punch with just the points in mind?.....you threw it like you meant it. Thats why I liked sport, I personally didnt think about anything else when I played just total focus and commitment on winning the game, match, race or whatever Edited February 13, 2013 by WILF
foxy locks 0
Footballers are pathetic excuses for anything. I've stopped watching it because of all the play acting and carrying on over nothing. If any of the games played on local parks on a Sunday morning were played under the same conditions as the pro's the games would have to be abandoned either because each team was down to just the goal keepers with the rest being sent off, the players would be dead on their feet because of the 6 hours of injury time and because of the length of the games and amount of stoppages the crowd wouldn't turn up to watch so no money would be generated. I don't do football because they are a load of "girls". RUGBY that's a real game.

Thats why I liked sport, I personally didnt think about anything else when I played just total focus and commitment on winning the game, match, race or whatever Its hard comparing the different sports Wilf.....yes i fought guys i knew early on i couldnt knock out and so your gameplan changes....doesnt mean your not committed because your not loading up with every punch.....it just becomes another way to skin a cat so to speak. As regards tackling.......we are so far behind in our attitudes to the game,i was listening to something the ex Liverpool player Alonso was saying the other week.....he was saying how he couldnt believe how us in England think a player being a good tackler is a good thing......he was saying how good sides and good players shouldnt need to make 50/50 tackles......countries like Spain and Holland do not even allow tackling at youth level, they see it as a horrible part of the game..........................now all im saying is these are the countries that dominate us Brits at the highest level.....i love a good committed tackle as much as the next man,but it doesnt produce succesful football anymore and is not seen as an important part of the game anywhere except here in England............it must tell us something Edited February 13, 2013 by gnasher16
WILF 46,585
Fair point mate, but you hit the nail on the head when you said its all about your opponent. You can only play whats in front of you, and sometimes being a little more physical is another tool in your box........if you dont have that in your amoury then you are not a complete team or player. You can be the most skilful player in the world, but if you are easily intimidated, knocked about easily or scared of getting hit with a tackle then you have a weakness.........its a weakness that can be exploited by clued up players. This of course works vice versa. Ask Messi or any of them who they think is the best mid field player in the world?..........to a man I bet they would say Paul Scholes. A player who can spray the ball about and land it on a sixpence, score goals, is happy with it at his feet BUT also knows when to give an opponent a tap on the ankle to slow him down a bit and do the ugly stuff........a complete player. Sometimes when you play an "ugly" team, you have to match them and beat them at the ugly stuff for say 45 minutes, mentally they will start to fold if thats all they have in the locker, then you can let your football take over and shut them down mentally for good.......normally it will be a cricket score after that. I am sure it was the same boxing, you can fight the biggest, hardest man in the world but if you can break him down mentally by matching him you can then let your technique take over......but if you are scared of the rough stuff and your opponent picks up on this, then he has you beaten from the get go. At top level clubs, I dont think you will see a better example of what I am talking about than Manchester United, which I think any sane person will agree is one of the top clubs in the world. They can do ugly and they can do beautiful and they can also mix the two.....it works, the trophy cabinet proves it. At international level, as a team I dont think we have managed to blend the continental skill with the English rough and tumble.......if we can do it one day, then you will see a team IMHO Edited February 13, 2013 by WILF
gnasher16 30,025
Well in Wilf i love listening to folk who have played the game....there used to be a Scottish lad off here i forget his name now who had played at a decent level i used to like hearing his thoughts as well. I think in a roundabout way we are in agreement.....it takes an allrounder in any sport to be the very best, you cant reach the pinnacle of your sport if you have weaknesses........though i do think the game is changing to the point where tackling is not as important as it once was......if you watch the Spanish clubs play each other they barely make a tackle but the price you pay for that is a slower game which us in England traditionally dont like.....i do think our game is still in a bit of a time warp we havent moved with the times especially at International level we get made to look silly............. For me Bobby Moore was the greatest tackler to ever play the game but he wasnt a toughman type player.......i remember Pele saying " I was always 2 steps ahead of him on the pitch but he was always 3 steps ahead of me in his mind ".......................in my opinion physical toughness in any sport will 9 times out of 10 give way to skill and ability......... This game tonight i cant wait for it......Ive said for a few years now Ronaldo is the greatest player ive ever seen play the game,he might have the odd roll around like a big girl.......but he,s plenty tough enough....its the game that changes not the players.
patterdalejoel 669
imo its not about rugby players being tougher than football players. they cheat and dive and roll on the floor to gain an advantage, not because they genuinely are hurt to that degree. and i think i remember you said before gnasher, footballers are at a higher level of fitness so they become injured more easily. rugby players arent as fit though, as they dont need to be. Attack Fell Terrier 864
IMO that wanker in the clip is nothing to do with being a player this or a competitor that , it's just an indication of what a complete wanker he is as a man.

I truly believe that mate yes....the trouble is like anything geared up for high performance it can become quite brittle when flat out......look at a high performance car......or a top quality running dog its quite a delicate athlete when in peak fitness.........rugby players are durable like no other, but cant possess that extreme high peak fitness as you wouldnt get away with that in Rugby. I remember 6 or 7 years ago my son went on holiday with a few of his pals, one of them being an ex Chelsea player he,s known since childhood.....he was telling me how he had to have this gadget with him that every day he had to plug into a laptop that would go back to the club so they could keep a check on his fitness.....It measured things like bodyfat/calorie intake/resting heart rate etc etc etc......a complete rundown on his body every day while on holiday to make sure he wasnt getting pissed up and eating silly ......thats how strict these top players fitness has to be.
