I was once the chairman of a working lurcher club, and as a committee member had to co-deal with some arguments that ranged from petty to darn right ludicrus.

We had a rabbit lamping competition,

Rules, competitors walk together, both dogs ran 5 rabbits each, runs taken alternatively. In the event of a draw, it went to sudden death. All seems quite straight forward dosnt it? Or does it?

Lamper A`s dog caught 4 rabbits, lamper B caught 3. All rabbits were returned by the respective dogs and put in the mens carrying bags. Contest over, back to the car, fill the form in, signed by both members, and then on to a spot of real lamping.

Lamper A tips his rabbits out, only 3 in the bag, 1 must have dropped out...Lamper B refuses to accept defeat, saying there are only 3 rabbits in the bag, its a draw.

Lamper A`s argument is a caught rabbit is classed as caught as soon as it is in the dogs mouth.

Lamper B`s argument is caught rabbits are what are securely in the bag at the end of the event.

So what was the outcome? This went in front of a committee of 7 men, who all had a vote

Dont forget, before the event there was nothing to constitue what exactly is defined as a caught rabbit for the competition.

I think its once the dog haws it in his mouth  The best lamping dog i have ever seen wouldnt retrieve so it just dropped the rabbit and ran back so the odd one was lost if it was longish grass :D Thats another question was this really a good lamping dog because he wouldnt retrieve even though he was capable of putting ubelievable scores of rabbits in the bag? :hmm:

I'd have said that it must be in the bag at the end of the night. In a coursing competition the number of hares caught only counts when the hares are laid out at the end of the comp.: Seeing the dog catch one in the distance, then failing to find the 'body of evidence' always meant that without the carcase it doesn't count as a catch.

If it's that petty, I don't think I'll be joining a lurcher club any time soon !

Cheers.

Your right its very petty the lad who lost should just admit he lost and stop being such a tosser

Like I said at the beginning, some of the things that cropped up were unbelievable..Talk about school kids, and these were grown men..I will put some more up later. Yes it does put you off joining clubs, it not just lurcher clubs, Ive been on committees of bird clubs, juniour football clubs and its just the same, well, maybe not so bad. I known some great lurchermen over the years, that would have nothing whatsoever to do with clubs..I would certainly never have anything to do with the running of one ever again. It was this sort of petty squabbling, plus a few over sized ego`s and social climbers that destroyed our club :(

No body No evidence of the catch simple as that, but the rules should of been clear before the start of the comp! IMO

Hi joe, know exactly what you mean, but, it was a newly formed club trying to get some work, as well as shows for its members, a lamping competition had never been done before, so, after the vote of the committee concerning this argument, a rule was ritten in to all future events so they could be run smoothly and enjoyed.

So which lamper lost his case?

Which lamper and dog walked away from the club with their tails between their legs?

PS Joe, dont forget, these blokes had been walking with each other all night, and seen every chase..So lamper B had actually witnessed lamper A`s dog catch 4 rabbits

And I bet you now, the vote on here will be as close as the committees, and the result will be the same

Lamper A defo won the comp and Lamper B knows he lost by the sounds of it A VERY BAD LOSER! sounds as if he could of even stole a rabbit outa lamper A's bag! Where abouts are you based Doxhope?

The commitee should of awarded lamper A the win and changed the rules ans suspended lamper B for being a baby lol

Hi Joe, up the road from you, Northumberland.

But, the club was the Northumberland & Durham Working Lurcher Club

Lamper B aknowleged the fact he seen the other lads dog catch the rabbits, but stuck to his guns the rabbits should be there at the end of the competition..That was his argument. "If you were out for numbers, and killed 20, and when you got home there was only 19, you have only 19". What if the rabbit wasnt dead as it went in the bag and escaped, weve all seen our dogs catch a rabbit, turn the lamp off or swing the beam to look for the next one to chase as the dogs carrying back, put the light on and the dogs is there but not the rabbit, can you still count it?

Once the dog picks a rabbit up is it not caught?

Once the rabbit is in the owners hand, is it not caught? If the owner drops it, its not the dogs fault, its done its bit.

There are loads of arguments as we have already seen on this thread, and I think, more to come.

When I said it was petty, this argument raged on for a very long time, and the face of common sense was well and truly slapped many times.
