Quick Set Or Traditional

I owned both.....iv kept my traditional nets....they go nicely in my jacket so I can go ferreting or have a mouch at night...its harder handling a traditional net but once you've got the hang of it its a real sense of achievement doing a drop at night catching some rabbits/partrige and away without hardly a trace....your stepping in the footsteps of poachers from a century past.......even if you have permission........a lot of people talk the talk but not many can use a net at night........

Long netting at night with a traditional set of nets is something very special, you either get it or you dont. I have been doing it for well over 20 years and I am still learning. The easy part is shooting the net

.

There are so many other factors to take into consideration, access, wind direction & strength, natural preditors that may have been on the set, what time the rabbits feed. They all factor in the result at the end of the night. As I always say, if you do not like a challenge, then perhaps long netting at night is not for you?

Dont do much night netting now, but did a few drops in my time, with the trad, this is the way i was taught.

I agree with what has been said, good for sneaking onto places you shouldn't be.

A lot easier to run, and get over fences, than a basket.

i use the quickset for daytime ferreting, but the odd time i go out at night, I like to run the traditional.

used to always use a 100 yarder, but now its a bit of fun, so i just use two 25 yarders on a small set I know, don't pick up big kills, usually five or six.

Just nice to run the webs the old way.

Ive used both but on a railway banking running a quickset up it i couldnt get the bottom line to huge the banking so i ran a traditional and set it how i wanted it but being honest that slope was the only problem ive had

I use both traditional and quickset.

The Traditional has lots of pros, you can adjust it to suit situations, its light and easy to carry. But it can take longer to lay and pick up.

The quickset is great also but I only take it when we don't have to walk miles, ideal for large expanses, and quick to set but the weight is a real issue, easy to use also.

Me and my mate started using the quicksets at the end of last season when out ferreting and to be honest i dont know why we wern't using them years ago.We wouldnt go ferreting now without them and they let us catch rabbits were purse nets are just not practical.Have never used a traditional so cant comment on them ,all i know is the quickset is easy to get to grips with right from the word go. not many people do the long netting here in Norn Iron as im sure you know so we had little info or anyone to show us how it was done, so the quickset for ferreting was the way to go.if you can walk backwards carrying a basket.. your in, simples! :D

That is one of the main advatages of trad over quick sets. With the trad net you get to place the pegs where they are needed.

for me it would be the traditional for night time netting everytime, it sounds a bit strange but its nice when the net goes out well, catches and then picks up well ready for the next time. im not for the basket as im way too lazy to carry all that weight

Sounds nice, all very fairy tale... I scared all the horses, nevermind the rabbit the first drop I tried. Not had the weather since :whistling: I`ll get it out again, just not with as much dutch courage, scared off the dark though...Fair Play bud, I know the skills needed for a good drop.
