Popular Post jigsaw 11,875 Posted February 10, 2013 Popular Post Report Share Posted February 10, 2013 I sat last night thinking will I go for a run with the lurchers for a fast feller or check to see if the smellys were anywhere to be seen,so weighing up the pros and cons of both,i decided the smellys were the safer bet as the speedys are far and few between.Gave Taz the kelpie x a whistle and gun and camera loaded in the van,off we went.I had the idea that id try and photogrph them today rather than shoot em as I dont see the ammount i used to any more.Well I drove past the farm house and hoped I'd not see the farmer as he has no mercy whatsoever on the mob,all must die is his decree.I travelled out the lake road and after a few miles I thought i was safe,who should come towards me on the friggin bike but the farmer himself.we had a chat and he proclaimed he had just past a dozen in the old lane up the road,so I thought here we go again,lol I parked up and taz and I walked through the high ferns and furz and after a half hour,not a trace.I was wonder ing where they might be.I spoted some frog spawn and there was plenty of it about,so the frogs are enjoying themselves I decided to climb a high rocky outcrop and look farther up the hills and surrounding countryside.As I reached the top there they were,way over on the other side of the heather bog,..grazing contentedly.This of course meant I had to get back to the van,drive around the valley which was about a 6 mile journey and then hoof it up to the top of the hill againwhich would bring me right on top of the mob and if they stayed where they were I could get within 20 yards easily without being spoted.the idea of photographing them was well gone out the window.Hunting fever had taken over I passed the farmer again on the way back and slowed to tell him the mob were spoted and in due course they would be dealt with.Off again at high speed and turn up the lane into the yard.Dog,gun,knife and camera,off we go.A bit of a jog and I was up the hill in no time.We reached the last field,a click of the fingers brought taz to heel and we crept up along the high ditch to the point where they should be exactly in front of us.I crept up the ditch and onto the bog.Droped the dog in the sit position and told her not to budge.I lifted my head anddddd...................... YEP THERE THEY WERE .I lifted the camera and took a few photos,picked out a billy,this beast had no horns which was quiet alarming,never seen that before.Up with the gun and job done.there was an explosion of nannys and KIDS I didnt think they'd be runing about so early.Plenty of kids there were too.Mental note............get the freezer ready for a few tasty young uns at the end of the march month.I watched and photographed the escapees as they flew for their lives.I went ahead and did my cleaning up,gutting and beheading as his dome was a bloody mess,how he lost his horns I dont know,must investigate the situation and interregate the farmer to see if he knows how this happened, scabby head on the fooker,lol then I noticed his nails were a little ....erm....nasty how did the poor bugger managee to get about at all after this the horrid job of draging him down the 2 fields and lane was ahead of me, on the way home I spoted the girls and babys again and decided to photograoh them only this time,I could do with a long lens for the camera,some day i'll get one,lol anyway thats about it,hope it didnt bore the shite out of ye. 26 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

jigsaw 11,875 Posted February 10, 2013 Author Report Share Posted February 10, 2013 a few random snaps mr badger is about Taz blending in if you can make out the black billy looking straight at the camera,i was hopeing to get him mounted on the wall at some stage,today I noticed he had lost 1 of his horns,i was gutted,he is a tremendous specimen,long black beard,silky shiny coat and for the last 3 years I was keeping tabs on him, and the real reason I waited so long was I couldnt afford to get him done im going to leave him breed away for another while now and if I see hes deteriorating in health in the future I'll cull him but hes my special little man .....for the time being anyway,lol below you see how effective Taz's cammo colours work,lol if you look just under the trees and to the left of the fence posts you can just make out(told you I need a lens)the goats grazing. can you spot the trail of the goats on the wet grass just ahead of Taz all right thats enough of that i think 4 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

jigsaw 11,875 Posted February 10, 2013 Author Report Share Posted February 10, 2013 I was speaking to the farmer and he thinks it might be mite that ate the base of the horn and weakened it or it could be ring worm.hes not sure but thinks this might be the reason.
