so really its no that close then lol

seriously though.how many reckon that will be the way it ends for us one day.it happened before,so its not outwith the realms of possibility.also im guessing were not that clever to stop it,if it ever was gonna happen.

I'd say it was pretty close, considering it's size and relative distances. Bit like having a bullet miss ya head by 2ft! Close enough to raise pulses.

Dunno if that's what'll kill us. I don't think we could realistically deal with one now. We can't even get to Mars or even the moon, never mind redirect of destroy a world killing asteroid/comet.

Couldn't we just fire a few nukes at one if it was on its way to hitting us?

To be honest, I'm not sure, the issue is we would need a thermonuclear device powerfull enough to absolutely oblitterate the object, the fear would be busting it up into numerous smaller objects. I seem to think we don't have a bomb powerfull enough to be sure of destroying a life killing asteroid!? Also the composition of the asteroid/comet, a solid one is easier to destroy than a porous one, that would just absorb the energy with little actual destruction.

They could be used to deflect an asteroid, lots of little pushes to gradually change the trajectory. Or something more elaborate like a solar sail could be used. Both require early discovery as they are gradual effects.

When we were all going to die on 21st December as per the Mayan calendar, I said to one of the girls at work (blonde) "Only 10 minutes to live" and she genuinely said "Do you really think the world is going to end then?"

I said I did but I'd come in as I'd hate to leave my desk messy.
