Neck shot every time no run on after that or take a dog.

ok for experienced shots but i wouldnt advise it for new people to the sport but like you say neck and head ive never seen them take more then a step but to much risk for new shots

The one's i have seen shot through the neck or front shoulder's more or less or do drop on the spot..the neck is also a bit of a bigger target than the heart..so i don't think it's down to experience..you are rather a good shot or a shite one..

The circumstances generally dictate whether it be a chest or neck shot for me. I prefer chest but if close enough will neck them, all about confidence for the most part. On the subject of running on Sika can take some punnishment, had one go 150 meters with both lungs holed and the heart touched; that was in forrestry and finding it could have been another story (withour a dog) if the conditions wern't as good as they were.

yokel ,overkill im with you on the sika ,they are the toughest of all the deer in my experiance.Perfect heart shots & they run on every time, and it can be a good distance.I do some park work so you can see how the different spieces react ,the sika are by far the toughest .

Morning all, interesting hearing the different replies, do we think its smaller deer I have just returned from a quick wet trip to see if I could see the lame one Im after on my earlier post and saw a nice prickett and hit him in the chest and he dropped like a sack.

 

I remember years ago when I was in hunt service and we used to put things down if you shot a small pig it would run laying down and sometimes get up and run, it was dead but nerves kept it going. What started this post was a roe in a field that did a similar thing and from what you guys say its the smaller deer that do it more than the bigger deer, just out of interest has anyone had this happen with anything large?

 

Ive only ever shot around Sussex that has massive amounts of fallow, I shot a few M/J in mid 80s around the midlands but dont remember too much about them.

mj are not really a problem but yes sika are hellish tough, ive seen them literally smashed to bits in the engine room and are still tanking along,i take head shots on muntjac unless trophy animal. cheers

if a shoulder shot is taken theres a good chance the heart and or lungs will be hit ,ive been called out to dispatch deer that have been shot badly in the neck the deer was alive but full of infection also seen deer with jaws half missing a engine room shot is a bigger safer target but like i said a well placed head or neck shot will drop them on the spot

No hard or fast rules i have had muntjack and fallow run with .308 150 grn sp and had them drop to shot all heart shot. Even had a buck heart shot at a short distance that was looking around for the sorce of the bang with what looked like a hosepipe of blood pouring from the exit wound.

Now use a .260 129 grn sp and get less runners ? Why ? don't know one else may have the answer.

got to agree try shooting sika if you think thats bad, they run on forever sometimes specialy in the rut when there full of testesterone

I only head or neck shoot them they don't go any where and you get more money for them you start body shooting the game will cut your money by more then half

Head & neck are fine if your an experienced shot , your on a solid rest, and are shooting at a resonable distance, but for the guy that only gets to do the occasional outing they would in my opinion be advised to stick with the heart/lung shot , there is far more room for error , any where in the front box will normally kill even if they run on ,clip a jaw or neck they can be running for days .The first priority should be the humane despatch of the animal ,anything else is secondary.
