Philluk 181
Was in a field this afternoon watching 2 roe at about 120 yds, unfortunately one was male but I was on a horse type bank/hill thingy one of those you go over on horses its basically a lump of grass 25 ft high x 25ft wide I crept up it and saw the 2 deer, i had plenty of time and zoomed right in whilst it was grazing took the shot, it ran forward and in a tight right hand circle before dropping and didnt move. I worked out from inpact to fall it travelled about 50ft before dropping, that could make one hard to find in thicker woodland, luckily this was an open field. I hate to gralloch on site especially there so I have just done it here and to my surprise it has a hole straight through the center of its heart. It was the perfect shot and yet it travelled so far. has anyone elase had this? Quote Link to post
toby63 1,236
you will be supprised how far they can travel before they drop. Quote Link to post
themightybuck 9
its amazing how far they can go especially after their adrenalin kicks in! i have a little Teckel and she is great at finding deer that are wounded or just run a little, i shot a stag with my .243 the bullet didn't too to much damage but was in the right place straight through the heart and lungs it ran out of sight and fell in a huge area of waste high reeds nightmare! but i ran back to the landy grabbed the quad and dog and got back just before it got dark 20 minutes later she was stood on top of it and wouldn't let me any were near it! Philluk 181
thanks all i've never really taken much notice before, as ive never had one go more than a few yards normally they just drop i guess i must be lucky or they have moved but and ive not noticed. im in need of a quiet gun will start a new thread soon, im doing a lot of work near horses and up to 100 yds so a 240 small with a silencer or does someone know something really quiet in another range? coldweld 65
What you useing now ? A .240 is no quieter than anything else infact small and fast is sometimes noisier than big and slow and the strike will alarm horses. Quote Link to post
Philluk 181
.243 I know there is a big difference in silencers but they get better I've got the Jet z. But I've had it a while I was just thinking if there is something new fairly quiet Edited February 7, 2013 by Philluk Quote Link to post
The one 8,463
As said that the adrenalin kicking in Quote Link to post
themightybuck 9
I think you will probably be better looking for a better silencer rather than a differnt rifle as coldwell says there is not a huge variation in the smaller calibers such as, .243 .240, .25-06, .22-250 etc but I think they are quieter than the bigger boys such as .270, .308 , 303 etc. I suppose it comes down to if you are prepared to carry a large heavy silencer that will dramatically reduce the noise? The one 8,463
When i worked for the forestry there was four of us used to shoot any deer that got into the plantations and some guys would go for heart shots and some neck shots and when you had big number to control the heart shot one's would some times travel a few yards before they went down ,but the neck shot usually dropped on the spot , and thats when we got talking and reckoned it was the adrenalin theory Quote Link to post
rioulike 2
i have had a roe buck run 100yards with mashed heart and mashed lungs Quote Link to post
beast 1,884
i've had heart-shot deer run on 100 yards plus, not that uncommon. i wont go out any more unless the dog is in the truck just in case, getting too old to be running all over the place searching in a panic! Quote Link to post
ratattack 111
It's simply adrenaline allowing the body to run on. Quote Link to post
fenlandfieldsports 4
i always remember to tell clients about the run on ,when i first started i had a chap shoot a good roe it ran on about 90yds in that time he must of said sorry once a yard when i finally pointed the buck dropped when he gralloched it the shot was fine took the whole engine room apart he couldnt believe how it ran i always make a point now with novice shots about telling them about run on 1 Quote Link to post
