I love this sort of older stuff :) Those mental little cages, made just for a certain type of canary to go in? Brilliant! People cared and took such pride, back in the day.

My Uncle kept birds. Canaries, Natives, god knows what. I gave him a goldfinch and he never stopped marvelling at it and saying how good it was till the day he (Uncle Bill) died.

Lo and behold; I start doing the old family tree game and scratch away at the surface of Uncle Bill, along the way. I can't be certain without checking. But his Dad, or Grandad, on one census, put his occupation down as " Bird Fancier "! :icon_eek:

To this day, I wonder exactly what he meant by that. As we all know; Prior to 1954, that title would be equally applicable to a bird Keeper or a 'Purveyor' :whistling:

On reflection? I can't honestly see anyone making his living out of a city back yard aviary. Still; All perfectly above board and legal, in those far gone days.

Above board though? Interestingly, I have some old ephemera here which suggests, even well before '54, certain of " The Fancy " were happy to keep their heads down.

Like I say; I love this older stuff

there show cages for yorkshires, when i sold mine a few yrs ago

i got £35 quid for 3 and the carry case

but they were in top nick

sold most of mine to a lad that uses them for hanging out cages ---

same here mate used to use then for hanging the cocks in, especialy the natives

so they could'nt give the hens too much stick, used to hang them on the front of

the double breeders
