Pellet Type

Recommended Posts

Right flat head pellets were designed to punch nice clean holes in paper targets 10 metres away, not embed themselves in the central processing unit of a rabbit 30 metres away. Anything over 10 metres and you will have an awful job getting an accurate shot out of a flat head pellet, best to stock with domed pellets. The flight of a domed pellet is much easier to predict and is lethal up to 60 metres away.

Have you set the scope up since you changed pellets? Might be a daft question but if you have not, you will find that you simply won't hit as the flight path has changed!

Can you put 10 shots together at 25 yards in a circle that is less than an inch? If not, practise until you can!

thanks lads. yeah human error by the sounds of it.

Cheers skot, headshots only then.

Lewis im from middlesbrough originally but living just outside redcar now. looking at brotton too. plenty of green fields out that way. plenty over yarm too just a bit out of my price range at the minute :)

S.A.M - I bought them purely as the gunsmith recommended them. I didnt know the first thing, and am still pretty new. i will stick with the domed as by the sounds of it the flat heads are unpredictable. Yeah i checked my scope was on too, although getting my shots on taking my time in the light of day is different to doing it with a lamp, I'll make sure i get some practise in.

reaper - Ill make sure i get used to shooting these pellets.

Try a softer type of pellet, accupel are quiet hard and don't distort on impact as much.

I take it you know where to aim? Down from ear , in line with the eye. Try to avoid front on shots too. Atb

Cheers mate. any recomendations? my mate has a s410 and shoots piledrivers (i think thats what he called them) but its an FAC rifle so.....pretty much any pellet at that sort of power will put most stuff down. yeah, im getting more used to where the pellet starts dropping and at what distance too. what do you mean by on shots..?

Jsb, aa, fx, superdome, superfield, would be a good place to start. Front on shots, like shooting between the eyes, it is a rumor pellets deflect off there forehead..how true I'm not sure. Stick some bottle tops out at diff ranges out to about 45yrds, see if you can hit 5/5.

I think jsb deliver the best whack in any gun iv owned, .177. An a mate's mk4 .177 using jsb whacks too f.p. good luck.

P.s pellet testing is a twat, but once you found it , you'll be well impressed with the tx

Soon as i get paid im going to be buying a few tins of them and try the different ones. jsb and air arms both getting awesome reviews on a few sites so thats where I'l start. tin of each and plenty of target time.

rob, i understand what you mean now, only side on shots. To be honest im really impressed with it already. Got it cheap, broken and third hand. and got her fixed up...little bit battered but (after you get used to the heaviness compared to some rifles) its a really nice rifle to shoot. it improved dramatically when i upgraded the scope on it.

Domed are the way forward to hunting, IMO more entertains and the air arms are a softer pellet which means more damage and more shock :)

yeah mate, ive bought jsb exacts and some air arms too. gonna put a few of each through and see what the rifle prefers...i didnt know there was such a vast amount, calibre, brand, type, grain etc.

ive run 12 diff types of pellet through my ultra, ive only had it a month! h and n ftt seem the best but jsb exact are just as good as are rws superdomes. it doesnt seem to be a pellet fussy gun, even likes h and n terminators out to 25 yards.

just take time in findind the right match, and practice, might be sad but i enjoy putting 10 shots through the same hole on a paper target! more than any thing it gives me confidence when im out in the field. shot placement is everything!
