devon flighter 421
I'm having a go with plants this year (parsnip) the plugs are about 40mm and healthy. First time. Also put in 5 celery plants which a friend gave me. Haven't a clue other than to ridge them to blanch the stems. Now't ventured now't gained. Another first for me, bought some fleece which I've put over the carrot seed drills to hopefully stop the fly. Onion plants coming this week. i tried the germinating parsnips in the GH the last couple of years and struggled a lot ! this year out side in drills "no problem " so hopefully lesson learnt ! im not over keen on celery but OH is ,i sown a few seeds a while back and they are through now "inside " cant think of the name off hand but these are self blanchinig supposedly and dont need earthing up so we will see . How bad was that frost last night? Bet it caught a few out last night wasnt to bad but saturday night/sunday morning was ! spuds not through yet and i covered the parsnips up with fleece other than that just the onions shallots and garlic in,things seem ok so far ,but certainly need to watch out this year i think . devon flighter 421
if carrots germinated as well as parsnip I would be a happy bunny nah just the snips ,i dont do carrots at the moment ,we are just building the depth up in the beds, only have the one deep enough at the moment and carrots are not on the list for that one ! out of curiosity how long after filling beds with manure "decent stuff" would you attempt growing carrots in it ? as to get some organic matter in to start building the depth we filled some up BACK END 2014 . we started with a patch of concrete that we dug up to turn into a veg patch when we moved in in 2013 so it an on going project ! jok 3,247
DF. Got my brewer saving all his spent hops, some cracking leaf mould, 4 year old muck and a bag of compost. Should make a good trench filler for the tap roots.
devon flighter 421
jok out of likes again sounds good ,when we were down devon some allotmenteers used waste wool from axminster carpets . i heard that carrots dont like new ish manure thats why i asked about how long before planting , fortunately no shortage of manure about very close ,its just a matter of the time delay in planting carrots ,the beds are generally coming on ok ,guess we always want things sooner

jok 3,247
Tiercel. Why is that? Is there an alternative that carrots like? Reason am asking. Father used to muck everything on the farm and from a hazy past he grew everything. I do remember some granules he put in potato trenches but other than that it was a boot up the arse and hard work.(Nitram I think).

Dependant as to where your living the date will be different. North later and further south earlier. But that is not set in stone many have been caught out, including myself. Tiercel. Why is that? I do remember some granules he put in potato trenches but other than that it was a boot up the arse and hard work.(Nitram I think). I am not 100% sure but there is something in manure that makes the carrots fork, same with parsnip. I am sure that I have growing notes for a compost for growing Parsnip and Carrots somewhere. I will see if I can dig it out. (Pardon the pun unintended) TC

Tiercel 6,986
You all live in cloud cuckoo landI get frost every morning at about 6.30. Ah well. Keep trying. Lol. The minimum temperature here last night was 9.3C now if that is low enough to give you frost you can sell your Rotavator and I will dig your garden for you. Check for yourself. http://www.llanelliweather.co.uk/ Edited to add: As an after thought, there is a hell of a difference between dew and frost.
