Tiercel 6,986
How do you know when spuds are ready to lift? For First earlies in the ground, the rule of thumb is when they have finished flowering you can start picking them. But the longer you leave them in the ground the larger the potatoes become, dependant on variety and the amount of water they receive. TC
terryd 8,384
They do say to obviously have a little dig around the plant but I can can never find sod all when I do that so only really way is to yank a plant out to give a true reading. Also it takes a while to eat your way up the row so that can be taken into account. Also the slug issue maybe. I was amazed so far I have not seen a slug hole which is great so maybe the constant digging over as I now in my 3rd season is paying off
terryd 8,384
Spuds sorted for the week. Not the greatest producers so far but a hit taste wise savoy and purple sprouting in this lot should get things moving next year Plenty of strawberries at the moment. I did plan on jam but I suspect they won't be in fridge long enough
terryd 8,384
Summer calabrese have been bit of disaster I was expecting decent ones after the winter ones being quite tidy but they all have tiny heads I have not done much watering if any so I think I need to pull me finger out. The runners looks quite pale and not happy as well Edited June 21, 2015 by terryd

TC not the strawberry Allan but will the blackberry as per your recipe worked a charm last year and beats messing about checking for a set I wasn't sure the strawberry would work being lower in pectin and didn't want to cock it up

whatdog72 287
Tomatoes and cucumbers seem to be flying in the poly tunnel on the capillary matting, only watered once a week to add feed
whatdog72 287
Planted some spinach, spring onions, iceberg, radish, little gem and rocket in the poly you can literally watch it grow
