Yacon is a veg but can be used as fruit also apparently Yacon is a tuber grown in South America. Its Andean name is ‘ground apple’ and it has a pear/melon flavour. It is best eaten raw, peeled and sliced or in a fruit salad. It is very crunchy and goes well with pineapple. It’s a real thirst quencher. It can be cooked and it will keep its crunch, stir fried is absolutely delicious and seems to be best. The plant is grown from tips and can reach 1.5m. It will produce the tubers towards the autumn when the yellow flowers appear. The frost will kill off the top. 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

whatdog72 287 Posted April 15, 2015 Report Share Posted April 15, 2015 Terry I've just got some of them gladiator parsnips as I've been told there tasty, I've also got myself some sweet candle carrots has anyone on here grown them I've raised one of my beds by another scaffold board and topped it up with sharp sand, compost and vermiculite so I can grow some descent sized parsnips and carrots, it's the bed with the micro mesh on I have also built my pea trellis up high as I've just sown some aldermans peas, been told there heavy croppers, anyone tried these 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Are they plastic tubs in your beds ?Yes there 90 litres tubs, my pal got them from his work so I have put black poly down in the bed and sat the tubs onI'm going to try different varieties of potatoes in the top row and if the yields are ok I will most likely stick with it as it will save me moving my crops about Quote Link to post Share on other sites
terryd 8,384 Posted April 25, 2015 Report Share Posted April 25, 2015 Just a couple of small cauli today hopefully get a bigger one off these getting to grips with the weed frabic Poxy mice have cleaned out the broad beans I sowed a few weeks ago going to have to sort them out. Will give the next batch the paraffin treatment. Just seems to be any peas or beans sown with in a certain range of the sheds or compost heaps gets nailed. One of the plots has got this going on big humps of sticks and leafs and various other bit and bobs grass cuttings etc. Along the lines of what some one mentioned previously I think Quote Link to post Share on other sites

terryd 8,384 Posted May 2, 2015 Report Share Posted May 2, 2015 Took delivery of my cow manure 20 quid for half a trailer load saves throwing bags of shite in the car though I still do that any way Planted out some ormskirk cabbage and gave the washing lquid a try be interesting to see how that goes. Also using cardboard from work as a weed suppressant. Might help the soil too when it rots down ? and the tidiest allotment award goes too NOt you messy sod I am more of a result man hopefully lol I new that net I found on the beach would be handy strawberries flowering onions are looking better this year but I will be putting slug pellets on this year as they took the lot last year peas laying on the surface thanks to the mice but you can't win them all. Saw a post on facebook which I will try. Throw a few peas down push a bottle over them and let them grow up through the bottle top and away. forest of dean redneck 11,535 Posted May 2, 2015 Report Share Posted May 2, 2015 Those strawberries look good,don't think I got any flowers on ones in garden yet,lol Potted 21 runner beans that had sprouted, in little greenhouse thing we got white strawberries seeds sown,dahlias and Queensland arrowroot,eat the tubers,all James Wong seeds Some cherry toms and broccoli, Down the allotment I planted about 24 plug plant seedlings of cabbage,cauliflower and Brussels ,and ripped up the nettles and weeds back of 2 beds,so I can grow peas up dividing fence.
